We were thrilled to be joined by Bianca Eder, the Global Head of Talent Acquisition at Upfield, to the EMEA Recruitment podcast.
"My best moments are when I hired somebody and a year, two years down the road, you hear from everybody: 'Wow, this person is so great!'"
Austrian-born Bianca now resides in the Netherlands, where she's been working from home (much like the rest of us) since March.
We kicked off the episode by discussing Bianca's slightly odd fascination with zombies – it's safe to say that she's ready for an apocalypse!
As someone that "loves" recruitment, we find out what it is about the industry that makes Bianca tick and why it's much more than a sales job. She also explains why it's so important to be transparent in an in-house role.
For jobseekers struggling to stand out in the current market, Bianca offered some helpful advice on getting your foot in the door.
We spoke about what still needs to be done regarding Diversity & Inclusion in recruitment, with some thought-provoking words from Bianca, who is a gay woman.
Reducing bias in interviews is something that will also form the future of recruitment, Paul and Bianca agree, while they both believe that old-fashioned recruiters will stand the test of technology – listen to the episode to find out why.
We learned the things that Bianca has found most difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic, but how brilliant 2020 has been for her career. Her pride at working for Upfield, the world's largest plant-based food company, is something that she's delighted to share with Paul.
As someone who loves the role she's in, we were interested to find out what Bianca would be doing if she wasn't working in recruitment – it's quite a difference!

We were delighted to be joined by Patrick Speek, an Interim CFO/COO, on the EMEA Recruitment podcast recently.
"It's okay to be uncomfortable, because you're learning when you're uncomfortable."
Patrick has worked for a range of different companies, across many countries and even continents. His broad experience has left him with a good idea of what makes a strong Finance business partner. He explains to our Founder, Paul Toms, the rule he has for how much time a Finance professional should spend behind their desk – it may be less than you think!
For those starting out in their Finance careers, Patrick believes that you only have to do one thing to start adding value to a business and be involved in conversations – listen to the episode below to find out his key piece of advice.
If you're a Finance leader, Patrick also offers his tips on motivating the teams that you manage to get the best out of them. This is something that he learned while working at GE as European Regional Controller. The company had a culture of rotational opportunities, which sometimes pushed employees out of their comfort zones. Patrick learnt to be uncomfortable.
However, he also accepts that businesses need stability in their teams, so he looks for a mix of mindsets in who he hires.
We discussed the most challenging point in Patrick's career, when he worked in the Middle East. He explains the different business culture in the region to Paul, as well as revealing why someone kissing you is the biggest compliment!
Patrick is open about his "deliberate choice" to move away from large corporates to small businesses and the opportunities that this has given him. For those aspiring to become CFOs, this is a section of the episode that you should listen to.
Although Paul has known Patrick for a number of years, they rarely discuss the ways in which Patrick relaxes outside of work. Towards the end of the episode, we spoke about Patrick's charity commitments and love of cycling. Our first EMEA Recruitment podcast episode of 2021 welcomes Peter van der Putten, the Director, AI Solutions at Pega and Assistant Professor, AI at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
"The irony of it is that AI sounds super high-tech, but on the flip side, it could help companies become more human."
Peter spoke to our Founder, Paul Toms, from his home in Amsterdam, which he agrees is a great place to work and live. He's always worked in Artificial Intelligence (AI), having studied one of the first master's degrees in the subject during the 1980s.
Peter's fascination with AI goes beyond the technological aspects; he's interested in finding the answers to questions that are centuries old, as well as how AI shines a light on human experiences and expectations.
We discussed the influence that AI will have on companies and people in the future, as well as the greatest shift in technology that has made AI what it is today. Peter's research in the field also stretches beyond AI and looks at the other unique human qualities that we could artificialize. Be sure to listen out for the study he managed on whether we can artificialize creativity!
It's his work in AI research that enables Peter to think positively about the future of AI; he explains to Paul how our relationship is evolving and what we can do about the negative aspects of technology.
In terms of business, Peter is insistent that companies must consider whose benefit they are using technology for. In fact, he explains how this change in focus is affecting the type of roles that will deal with AI moving forward. We talked about how professionals taking their first steps into a career in AI or Business Intelligence & Data can stand out.
Peter has some key advice for technologically-minded people who may be struggling in a business environment, as well as the best way for him to check out of his work.
We are proud to bring you this tech-focussed episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast, looking at the future of AI and its effect on business.

EMEA Recruitment is proud to welcome not one, but two Indirect Tax leaders to the podcast – eBay's Anitha Chakravarthi and Bart Caluwé, of Expedia.
"Own who you are and bring that to the table."
Anitha is the Global Head of Indirect Tax at eBay, while Bart is Expedia's Indirect Tax Director.
They spoke to our Founder, Paul Toms, at an incredibly anxious time; the USA was in the midst of the 2020 election and COVID-19 continued to take its toll on people's lives. It's been such a turbulent time that Anitha hopes 2021 is a little less exciting! Bart, too, joked that he'll hide under a rock and keep working until this is all over.
We kicked off the podcast by asking both Anitha and Bart about their experiences with Digital Services Tax – the new kid on the block in their industry. It's something that both eBay and Expedia, as online marketplaces, must deal with. However, they both explain how their departments deal with the legislation differently.
Anitha is positive about changes in the Tax sector, as it keeps her role interesting. Bart agrees that professionals must remain savvy to the new platforms in the Tax ecosystem.
Due to the changing demands of the function, Bart discusses why Tax newbies should go down that route in the first place and the roles available. Anitha runs through the characteristics that she believes good Tax professionals need, especially those interested in Indirect Tax.
We also found out Bart's golden nugget of recruitment – it's a top tip that any professional in any discipline can apply to the interview process!
Although we tried not to focus too much on COVID-19 during the podcast, it's difficult to have a conversation with anyone today without the coronavirus coming up. Paul asked both Anitha and Bart to explain how they've kept their teams motivated during the pandemic. As managers, they both have very human approaches, with positive outlooks for the future.
Inevitably, the conversation also turned to women in Finance, which has become an increasing focus of companies' Diversity & Inclusion agendas. Anitha has some inspiring words for all Finance professionals, but also offers advice for women in the industry.
Bart echoes Anitha's points, having worked with lots of women during his career in Tax.
We ended by asking Anitha and Bart for their dream podcast guests – while Bart sticks with Finance, Anitha's are at the opposite end of the spectrum… Listen to the full episode below to find out who they'd most like to interview.
We hope that you enjoy this special Indirect Tax episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast – please share it with anyone in your network that you think would benefit from Anitha and Bart's advice.

We were honoured to welcome Shari Levitin to the EMEA Recruitment podcast. Shari is a passionate global sales leader and CEO of Levitin Group, which she founded in 1997.
"We want to do good at work, but there's not a human being out there that doesn't also want to have a fulfilled, happy life."
Shari spoke to Paul Toms, our Founder, as the cold season sets in at her home in Park City, Utah.
She explained the core skills needed to be a successful salesperson. Shari also described to Paul the turning point in her career, when she realised she needed to reprioritise her life.
Although many of us hopefully won't go through the tragic situation that transformed Shari's life, she has some key advice for re-examining your priorities. It's especially relevant considering the global pandemic that has shifted many people's lives this year.
Shari herself talks about how she has managed to help her customers and, at the same time, grow her business during this turbulent time.
But Shari's priorities stretch much further than business, and she details this to Paul with a fantastic system, which she calls the triangle of fulfilment. For anyone struggling with work-life balance, Shari recommends instead looking for work-life integration, and shares her tools for managing this.
As Paul was keen to invite Shari onto the EMEA Recruitment podcast after reading her book, Heart and Sell, we also discussed how such a busy person got a book written and published to a tight deadline, all with four broken ribs!
In fact, traditional skills of reading and writing are the key to empathy, which Shari believes is the very skill needed to sell. She has some interesting thoughts on social media and how to use it effectively, as well as the ways we can still share love virtually.
Shari also shared with Paul some of her favourite inspirational quotes, and a heart-warming answer to the question of who she'd invite to her last supper.
We hope you enjoy this episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast, and find Shari's words inspiring, whether you're in the sales sector or not.

In this episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast, we were pleased to be joined by Rajiv Ramani, the Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Luxasia in Singapore.
"It takes ten years to build your own personal integrity, but it just takes ten seconds for all that to go away."
Rajiv spoke to Paul Toms, our Founder, in what has been an unusual year. He starts by sharing some advice on coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, both personally and professionally. In fact, Rajiv's calm and results-focussed approach forms the foundations of this podcast episode.
He explains the way he achieves a sense of buy-in from his team - with some strong sporting analogies – as well as the method he's used for managing employees over the COVID-19 period.
Rajiv shares his core set of values and principles, which he applies to life both in the office and at home. But what do you do when you don't meet eye-to-eye with certain people? Rajiv has some top advice for dealing with everyone from the CEO to frontline staff.
We were inspired by Rajiv's investment of time and effort into mentoring graduates, so asked him about why he took this step. Being so supportive of his team members and upcoming professionals is obviously time-consuming, but Rajiv explains how he manages to fit so much into his diary – and how he switches off at the end of the day.
Rajiv also discussed the impact of Business Intelligence (BI) and Data on the Finance function of the future, insisting that it's happening already.
He has a clear idea of how Finance will change in the next couple of years, but offers a word of caution on the information that we all share on the internet.
One thing that stands out speaking to Rajiv is his very calm and considered attitude. It's something that he says he's honed along the way, and would be earning mega-bucks if it was something he'd been born with!
We also found out what Rajiv has planned for the next few years and the way he begins each day – remember to share this episode with anyone that you think would benefit from Rajiv's advice.

We were proud to welcome Roberto Bollinetti, the Group CFO at AMC International, to the EMEA Recruitment podcast.
"To learn from mistakes, we have to be so brave to make mistakes."
From his home in Switzerland, Roberto discussed the challenges he currently faces as a Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with our Founder, Paul Toms. He explains that, although cash is king more than ever now, his challenges are not only financial; coronavirus is changing our way of working, making communication and motivation even more important.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on his organisation, but it has proven how quickly the company can adapt. Roberto explains how AMC International had planned a digital transformation in two to three years' time, but was forced to complete it in just three months. To Roberto, it proves how well human beings can get things done.
He has some interesting advice on how to create strong teams, which can be applied to all functions of a business. Although he claims to have no recipe for staying focussed, Roberto explains to Paul how he keeps projects moving in the right direction.
We also asked Roberto some slightly obscure questions, such as whether he could cut down to a four-hour work day and what he hopes is written on his epitaph!
Regarding the Finance function specifically, Roberto explains how quickly Business Intelligence (BI) and Data is changing the role, and which direction he believes analysis is going in.
We also found out why Roberto thinks sports stars make such good mentors – listen to the episode to find out who he's most inspired by.

The EMEA Recruitment podcast was pleased to welcome Jean-Michel Deckers, who serves on the board of various entities, and advises them on governance processes and growth strategies.
"I've grown the most when I was confronted with my own limitations by management."
As a previous CFO, CEO and M&A professional, Jean-Michel also supports a portfolio of clients in the technology, life science, medical and cosmetic industries in their strategies, development and corporate Finance projects.
Jean-Michel spoke to our Founder, Paul Toms, from his home office in Switzerland. He discussed the challenges and opportunities that he's seen in different roles at various companies, and the biggest obstacle that he currently faces as a non-executive director.
Jean-Michel combines his various interests, particularly in technology and life sciences, in his current work and is committed to using technology to have a positive impact on people's lives. It's this passion that helps him bring different perspectives to business.
In fact, Jean-Michel explains the importance of using data correctly within the Finance function, as more and more data is available to companies.
His focus on providing meaningful results is something that he also applies to management, as he describes himself as "more a mentor than a manager". Building for the long-term is also essential for retaining the best people, Jean-Michel believes.
During these current strange and sometimes difficult times, Jean-Michel offers his best advice for prioritising, working from home and preparation.
We also discussed who Jean-Michel has been mentored by in his own career and why he probably got more support than he deserved!

"Focus on the future and what you can do and what decisions you can take to change direction."

We also found out her top tip for all Finance professionals that Karin feels will boost your career.
Having progressed to the role of Finance Director, Karin has faced a wide range of challenges, which she discusses with Paul and explains how she manages them.

In this episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast, we were proud to be joined by a "living legend of recruitment", Greg Savage. Greg is an advisor, consultant, investor, speaker and author in the recruitment industry.
"We have no control over coronavirus, but we do have control over our response."
Inevitably, the topic of conversation between Greg and our Founder, Paul Toms, turned to the COVID-19 pandemic. Greg has been advising his clients about taking advantage of the recovery period as it comes. Keeping a positive mental attitude is something that he believes leads to resilience.
In fact, since his career in recruitment started back in 1980, Greg hasn't had a single conversation about a job in any other industry. But he does have a warning for recruiters of the future, as he believes some roles are under threat of automation. Greg reveals to Paul the skills that he thinks recruiters need to survive the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
He also explains why the recruitment sector is a fantastic career choice for women and other minority groups – it's an empowering discussion!
However, returning to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Greg feels that a lot of leaders were exposed in the first month or two. He runs through the six things that all great leaders, either in recruitment or not, need in the current situation.
Of course, all leaders also need to switch off. Paul and Greg discuss the best practices for looking after yourself and being more productive.
Whether you're an established recruiter, are new to the industry or are in another field entirely, Greg has some fantastic pieces of wisdom from his career in staffing and professional services.
