Burnout has become almost expected in medicine—but that does not mean healthcare professionals should simply accept it.
In this episode of Emergency Minute, Dr. John Parente sits down with executive leadership and burnout recovery coach Elsa Arend to discuss why burnout is so common among physicians, healthcare workers, and other high-performing professionals.
Drawing from John’s more than two decades in emergency medicine and Elsa’s experience recovering from burnout during her corporate career, they explore the warning signs that are often ignored, including emotional exhaustion, detachment, cynicism, declining empathy, and the feeling that there is simply no way out.
They also discuss why burnout is not merely an individual failure. Heavy workloads, increasing patient volumes, inadequate staffing, administrative demands, and a culture that discourages physicians from asking for help all contribute to the problem.
In this episode:
• How to recognize burnout before reaching a breaking point
• Why physicians often feel trapped in their careers
• The difference between everyday stress and true burnout
• How healthcare systems contribute to emotional exhaustion
• The importance of boundaries, self-awareness, and recovery
• When coaching, therapy, or a career change may be necessary
• How to rediscover purpose without abandoning everything you have built
Elsa Arend is an ICF-credentialed executive leadership and burnout recovery coach who helps professionals move from stress and overwhelm toward greater clarity, confidence, and energy.
Burnout can feel isolating, but it is not a personal weakness—and recovery is possible.
