Emotional Eats Podcast: Real conversations about menopause, hormones, emotional eating, and weight loss for women over 40 episodes

  • 179. Are You Really Resting? How Stress and Exhaustion Fuel Emotional Eating

You finally sit down at the end of the day. You put your feet up, turn on Netflix, scroll on your phone, grab the ice cream and tell yourself you're resting.

    But are you actually resting?

In this episode of the Emotional Eats Podcast, I'm talking with my friend and yoga therapist Cheryl Gordon about non-sleep deep rest, or NSDR, and why so many of us may be going through our days without giving our nervous systems the recovery they actually need.

Cheryl explains what NSDR is, how it differs from sleep, napping and meditation. We talk about why scrolling your phone or watching TV may feel relaxing, but doesn't give your nervous system the same kind of rest. We also talk about that familiar afternoon crash when your energy drops, your brain feels fried, and suddenly the pantry starts looking really good.

    Highlights:

    • Why stopping work isn't necessarily the same as resting • What happens when your nervous system stays overstimulated • Why the afternoon slump can make emotional eating more tempting • How rest can support clearer thinking and better decisions around food • How little time you may actually need to intentionally pause and recharge

And Cheryl doesn't just tell us how to do it. She leads us through a simple three-minute breathing practice right in the middle of the episode that you can come back to anytime you need it.

If you keep telling yourself, "I'm too busy to rest," this conversation may change the way you think about rest completely.

Because sometimes you don't need to push harder. You need to recharge.

And that trip to the pantry isn't just about the food.

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

What if food isn't the biggest thing you're carrying?

Maybe you've spent decades being the good daughter, wife, mom, employee, friend and caretaker. You're the responsible one. The strong one. The one everybody knows will handle it.

But carrying all of that comes at a cost. To your physical and emotional health.

In this episode of Emotional Eats Podcast, I'm talking about the connection between people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional exhaustion and food.

    We'll talk about:

    • Why high-functioning women can still feel completely out of control with food • How people-pleasing and perfectionism can quietly drain you • Why food can become your escape, reward or rebellion at the end of the day • What your "screw it" moment may actually be trying to tell you • Practical ways to carry less, choose yourself more and stop making food your only source of relief

You cannot out-diet emotional eating. If food is doing a job for you, we need to understand the job.

Maybe healing your relationship with food isn't only about changing how you eat.

Maybe it's also about asking, "What could I stop carrying?"

If you know another woman who is always the strong one, always taking care of everyone else and struggling with food behind the scenes, please share this episode with her.

And make sure you follow Emotional Eats Podcast so you don't miss upcoming episodes about emotional eating, menopause, body image, hormones and creating a healthier relationship with food and yourself.

  • 177. What Terminal Cancer Taught an Ironman Athlete About Living and What He Wants You to Know

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

What are you waiting for before you really start living? What are you putting off?

Listen in for the encouragement you need to just move forward and live your life fully.

This episode hit me hard. As someone who waits too often for the perfect moment and who teaches others to stop waiting, Jim has helped me reframe what it means to live in the moment and on purpose.

James Logan, entrepreneur, endurance athlete, husband, father, and author of Just Keep Tri-ing, shares how a stage 4 terminal cancer diagnosis changed the way he sees life, suffering, faith, fear, and the time we think we have.

We talk about the difference between resilience and complacency, why avoiding discomfort may actually make life harder, and what happens when you stop waiting for the right body, more money, retirement, or life to finally calm down before allowing yourself to live.

Jim also shares what he's learned about finding joy while life is still hard, surrendering what you can't control, and why facing death ultimately taught him how to live. We are all dying, but what are we doing while we're living?

This is not just a conversation about being terminally ill, but more about how to truly live a purposeful and intentional life…now.

Follow the Emotional Eats Podcast and share this episode with someone who needs the reminder that life isn't something we have to keep waiting for.

    About James

James has been battling stage 4 cancer since April 2024. He was given 6 months maybe 2 years to live. Two and a half years later, he is still alive and thriving thanks to faith and fitness! He wrote a book titled "Just Keep TRI-ING", a number 1 Amazon bestseller in three categories: Cancer, Triathlon and Spiritual Growth! "Just Keep TRI-ING" is also being considered for a 2027 Pulitzer Prize in the memoir genre.

James is currently training for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona Hawaii October 10 2026. He is raising funds for the IRONMAN Foundation; profits from my book go to the foundation until the fundraising goal of $100,000.00 is achieved! See link below to support James.

    THIS WEEK'S EPISODE

Food does make you feel better. We know and there is science behind what it does in the brain.

That may sound strange coming from me because I say all the time that emotional eating isn't really about the food. But if chocolate, chips, peanut butter, ice cream, or whatever you reach for didn't give you something, you probably wouldn't keep going back to it. Right?

In this solo episode of Emotional Eats Podcast, we're looking at what happens before you reach for food, what you're hoping to get from it, and what's there when the food is gone.

I explain the difference between physical hunger, emotional eating, and simply eating for pleasure. Because enjoying chocolate, birthday cake, or popcorn at the movies doesn't automatically mean you're emotionally eating.

    We'll talk about:

    • Why emotional eating can feel so urgent and automatic • The "job" you may be asking food to do • How shame and guilt keep the emotional eating cycle going • My emotional receipt exercise to help you understand what you actually needed

I'll also share more of my own story with peanut butter cups, sugar, secret eating, and believing that if I could just control the food, I could solve the problem.

This isn't about taking away your chocolate.

It's about recognizing when you're asking food to give you something it simply can't provide, like rest, connection, boundaries, or resolution to something that's bothering you.

You don't need another diet or another list of foods you can't keep in the house. You need to understand what the food is doing for you.

If this episode helps you understand your emotional eating with a little less shame, please follow Emotional Eats Podcast and share it with a friend who needs this conversation too.

  • 175. "I Hate My Body": How to Heal Your Relationship With Your Body After Decades of Self Criticism

You have spent decades trying to change your body, believing that once you did, you'd finally feel better about yourself and somehow, life would feel happier too.

Maybe you've dieted for decades. You've picked apart certain parts of your body. You've compared yourself to other women. And somewhere along the way, you started believing that changing your body would finally change everything.

Anne Poirier is back on the Emotional Eats Podcast after our first powerful conversation in Episode 151. I thought the first was deep, but this time we're going deeper.

What does it actually mean to heal your relationship with your body?

Because healing doesn't necessarily mean looking in the mirror every morning and loving everything you see. It may mean learning to trust your body again, quieting the voice that constantly criticizes it, and taking care of yourself without punishment, perfectionism, or another diet.

Anne and I also talk about something I know can feel complicated. What if you want to stop dieting, but you still want your body to change? Can those two things exist at the same time?

In this conversation, we talk about:

    • What healing your relationship with your body actually looks like in everyday life
    • How decades of dieting can disconnect you from your body and its signals
    • Why the inner critic can be so hard to quiet
    • Wanting your body to change without going back to dieting and punishment
    • How social media, GLP-1s, AI, and our changing culture are affecting body image
    • Moving your body from a place of joy instead of trying to earn food or change your size

If you've spent years telling yourself, "I'll feel better when I lose the weight," this conversation may give you a very different way to think about your body, your health, and what it means to finally stop waiting to live your life.

Make sure you go back and listen to Anne's first interview. Episode 151

  • 174. Eating Disorders, Genetics, and the Brain: What We May Be Missing

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

Paige Gordon lived with bulimia nervosa for over two decades. She went through residential treatment, inpatient treatment, therapy, and nutritional counseling, yet continued to struggle.

What made her experience especially difficult was being given explanations for her eating disorder that never seemed to fit. Paige didn't relate to an obsession with thinness, and she didn't feel that emotional eating explained what was happening either. Instead, she describes an intense drive toward food and constant food noise that felt biological.

Eventually, her own recovery experience led her to start asking a different question: What was actually happening in her brain and body?

Today, Paige is an author, advocate, speaker, and member of the Board of Directors of the National Eating Disorders Association. She has become deeply involved in eating disorder research and advocacy, with a particular interest in genetics, brain reward pathways, hunger and satiety signaling, and the potential role of GLP-1 pathways.

    In this conversation, Paige shares:

    • Why eating disorders may have very different underlying causes from one person to another • What food noise felt like for her and why it was different from hunger • How genetics, trauma, environment, and reward circuitry may influence eating behavior • Her personal experience with GLP-1 medication and why she believes much more research is needed • Why lived experience needs a bigger voice in eating disorder research • Why women struggling with food deserve curiosity and compassion instead of comparison and shame

We also talk about how easily eating disorders can remain hidden, the difference between disordered eating and a diagnosed eating disorder, and why Paige believes treatment needs to become much more individualized.

Paige's upcoming memoir, Searching for Full, tells the story of her eating disorder, recovery, and search for answers. One hundred percent of her royalties will go back into eating disorder research.

This is a fascinating conversation about how much we still have to learn about the brain, eating behavior, and why the same answers may not work for every woman.

    About Paige Gordon

Paige Gordon is an eating disorder recovery advocate, speaker, and author of Searching for Full. After living with bulimia for 22 years, she began questioning the long-held belief that our relationship with food is simply a matter of willpower. Today, she combines her lived experience with emerging research in neuroscience and biology to help people better understand food noise, emotional eating, and the complex factors that shape our relationship with food.

As a member of the Board of Directors of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), Paige collaborates with researchers, clinicians, and advocacy organizations to advance a more biologically informed understanding of eating disorders. Her work encourages people to replace shame with curiosity and empowers them to approach food, body image, and healing with greater compassion and understanding.

  • 173. Peptides for Women Over 40: What You Need to Know Before You Try Them

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

Peptides are everywhere right now. GLP-1s, BPC-157, growth hormone-releasing peptides, copper peptides. But what exactly are they, and where do they fit into your health as a woman in midlife?

Is it real or a new trend?

In this episode, I sit down with Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and peptide-trained practitioner Bria Gadd for a conversation that helped me understand this rapidly growing area of women's health in a completely different way.

Bria breaks down what peptides actually are, why women over 40 are becoming so interested in them, and the potential roles they may play in metabolic health, recovery, muscle, gut health, skin, hair, weight loss, and healthy aging.

But this conversation isn't about chasing the newest quick fix.

Bria explains why nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, metabolic health, and hormone optimization need to come first. We also talk about GLP-1s and food noise, testing before using peptides, cycling, potential risks, sourcing, and why buying peptides from questionable sources can be a very different thing from working with a qualified practitioner and compounding pharmacy.

This is one of my favorite points from Bria. Think of your health like a cake. Your foundations are the cake. Hormone optimization is the icing. Peptides and other biohacking tools are the sprinkles.

You have to bake the cake first.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • What peptides are and how they work in the body
    • Why peptides are getting so much attention from midlife women
    • The health foundations Bria wants in place before considering peptides
    • GLP-1s, metabolic health, insulin resistance, food noise, and weight loss
    • BPC-157, growth hormone-releasing peptides, and GHK-Cu copper peptides
    • Why testing and hormone optimization can matter before starting peptide therapy
    • Safety, cycling, sourcing, compounding pharmacies, and the peptide gray market
    • Why peptides may be a powerful tool for some women, but aren't meant to replace the work you're already doing for your health

If you've been hearing about peptides and wondering whether they're something you should explore, this episode will help you understand the conversation, know what questions to ask, and make a more informed decision about what may be right for you.

  • 172. How to Reinvent Yourself in Midlife and Feel More Alive

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

Maybe it's more joy. More fun. More connection. More freedom.

Or maybe you've spent so many years being the mom, the caregiver, the responsible one, the strong one, that somewhere along the way you stopped asking yourself a really important question: What do I actually want?

In this episode, Caroline (Caro) de Posada and I talk about what happens when the life you've built looks good on paper, but something still feels off. We get into the guilt that can come with admitting you're not happy with something you think you should be grateful for, the identities you've carried for years, and the fear that can keep you choosing what's familiar even when you know you want something different.

We also talk about permission. Permission to change your mind. To break some of the rules you've been living by. To stop waiting until you lose the weight, the kids grow up, work slows down, or everything finally falls into place before you let yourself enjoy your life.

And Caro gives us a simple way to start: Notice. Name. Nurture. You don't need to overhaul your life. You need to start paying attention to what's working, what you want, and the next small step that moves you toward it.

    In This Episode:

    • Why you can lose touch with what you actually enjoy and want
    • How fear, old identities, and people pleasing can keep you stuck
    • Why waiting for the next goal can keep you from enjoying your life now
    • Caroline's simple Notice, Name, Nurture approach
    • How to start noticing and creating more moments of joy and aliveness in your everyday life

If you are looking to get back to yourself, this is the episode for you!

  • 171. How to Stop Emotional Eating by Understanding the 4 Emotional Eater Types

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

You know you're not always hungry when you are reaching for the food, but you still find yourself digging into the sugar or food especially at night and wondering, why can't I stop doing this?

In this episode, I'm talking with registered dietitian Sherri Clarke, creator of the Four Emotional Eater Types framework, about why emotional eating goes so much deeper than food, discipline, or trying harder.

Sherri also shares her own powerful experience with emotional eating and how food became a source of comfort for her long before she understood what was happening. We talk about the patterns you may have learned years ago, why they can still show up decades later, and how getting curious instead of critical can begin to change your relationship with food.

    In this episode, you'll hear:

    • The four different emotional eater types and how to recognize yourself in them
    • How childhood experiences can shape the way you use food today
    • Why high-achieving, disciplined women can still feel completely out of control around food
    • How IFS can help you understand the "parts" of you that turn to food
    • A simple CBT tool to help interrupt an emotional eating moment
    • How mindfulness can help you pause and ask what you actually need
    • Why willpower may work temporarily but doesn't create lasting change
    • Why healing emotional eating doesn't necessarily mean never eating emotionally again

This conversation isn't about giving you more food rules. It's about helping you understand why you're reaching for the food in the first place and what might change when you stop fighting yourself and start getting curious.

    About Sherri Clarke

Sherri Clarke is a registered dietitian with a master's degree and special training in IFS, CBT, and Mindfulness. She's been in private practice since 2013, working exclusively with adults who want to change their relationship with food. She's also the creator of the 4 Emotional Eater Types framework and the Emotional Eater Quiz at sherriclarkenutrition.com. What makes her unique is that she doesn't just treat emotional eating — she's lived it herself.

  • 170. Why You Can't Stop Emotional Eating in Midlife

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast!

I had been connecting with Maryanna on social media for a while, and somewhere along the way I started listening to her podcast, Take the Turn, with her husband Jay. I really enjoyed their conversations about navigating midlife and all the changes that come with it. So when they asked me to come on and talk about emotional eating, I was extremely honored.

And we had such a great conversation.

We talked about my own history with emotional and secret eating, why you cannot out-diet emotional eating, and why midlife and menopause can make our relationship with food feel even harder. We also get into sugar cravings and dopamine, perfectionism and people pleasing, blood sugar, slowing down when you eat, and why so many capable women can take care of everyone and everything but still feel out of control around food.

Most importantly, we talk about looking beyond what you're eating and getting curious about what is happening before you reach for the food.

If you've ever wondered why you know what to do but still find yourself reaching for sugar, overeating, or using food to comfort yourself, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation.

Check out the Take the Turn Podcast especially if you are in your 40's and 50's and are navigating all the midlife things.
