In this episode of What's Up Wednesday, host Karli Burridge reviews the recent journal article: A Comparison of Emotional Triggers for Eating in Men and Women with Obesity by Guerrero-Hreins E. et al, published in the October 2022 edition of Nutrients.
This study was a single-center, cross-sectional study of a total of 387 patients attending obesity treatment services between December 2018 and April 2019 at a tertiary referral hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and included patients undergoing lifestyle changes alone, or as an adjunct to anti-obesity pharmacotherapy and/ or bariatric surgery. The aim was to determine the most common emotion(s) prompting an urge to eat, and to examine whether they differ according to sex.
The most common emotion identified by participants as triggering an urge to eat was boredom, regardless of sex or type of obesity treatment.
Conclusions: In addition to reducing appetite in the homeostatic parts of the brain, finding strategies to reduce emotional eating, in particular boredom eating, is essential for personalization of treatment for people with obesity.
