A major life event like Hurricane Katrina can shake people to the core and create real purpose in one’s life, like it did in co-host Amy J. Wilson’s life. A fateful quote led her to fully embrace being of service to others and making the “world live…with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.”
Once in AmeriCorps, she takes an oath that she’s carried with her since then. “Faced with apathy, I will take action. Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground. Faced with adversity, I will persevere.” This is the commitment that more than a million AmeriCorps members have taken since the organization’s founding in 1993.
In this episode we explore how change can help us find purpose, and purpose can lead us to change for the better. Much has changed in the world since then, and in many ways the pledge the Amy and so many others have taken could use a refresh for the 21st century.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, all of us take mental notes of what’s happening to us, what it means, and what we should do. Our minds are constantly scanning and interpreting the world. That’s how we stay on track and go through life. This is what is called a “mindset.”
Dr. Carol S. Dweck is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and mindset building, and literally wrote the book Mindset. Dweck states that “mindsets frame the running account that’s taking place in people’s heads. They guide the whole interpretation process.”
In today’s world we’re constantly going against challenges, setbacks, and criticism. A growth mindset helps us step into the unknown, the ambiguous, the uncertain, and know that no matter what happens, we’ll adjust the sails and set us on the right track. When we put intention around our mindsets we grow towards a version of ourselves that makes change easy and helps us find more love and empathy in and around us.
In this episode we discuss what a mindset is and how to move from our own comfort zones and into a growth zone, that will lead to a deeper sense of compassion.

The late American writer James Baldwin once wrote “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” It is a quote that is so relevant to today’s reality--and there’s some fundamental truths we need to face in order for us to change.
In this episode we face those truths that we need to discuss about change. We’ll do some internal awareness building to face the changes ahead, and take back control of our lives and the change we wish to take part in--or be able to affect.

We’re at the beginning of a new awakening where we can center ourselves to become more empathetic towards ourselves and others. Empathy and compassion have real applications and practice that can be learned and improved over time. Our work now will set the stage for a large culture shift and deeper understanding of wellbeing for the world.

Is our system broken or was it designed this way?
In this episode we lay the foundation of a powerful tide that has grown over the past 50 years: the rise of narcissism and the impact of the empathy deficit. We examine what narcissism might look like, the different ways it shows up in our lives, and data that shows the growth over time.
We discuss the challenges of a system that rewards and supports narcissistic behaviors and its impact on our communities. We explore how empathy may help to reverse this rise of narcissism, where we may be able to redesign systems and a society that may be veering out of control.
