    Episode Summary

Youth sometimes are thought of through the lens of a stereotype that paints a picture of screen-addicted partiers who are disconnected from local and global issues. This is certainly not the case for my guests Alex and Marta from Barcelona. They contend that many young people are passionate about global issues, and are eager and enthusiastic for opportunities to be part of the solution. As high school students, they identified a challenge for young people in getting connected with NGOs, and other organizations that lead impactful, sustainable work in our communities. They, along with their colleagues at HelpUp, decided to take action and do something about this. They have created the app, HelpUp, to connect young people with NGOs to create opportunities for meaningful volunteer work. Join me as they discuss their experience and learning as entrepreneurs, their international recognition, and their aspirations for the future.

    Episode Summary
On this episode I connect with 3 documentary filmmakers from Dulwich College at the Pudong Campus in Shanghai. Phoenix represents a group that focused on SDG 5, Gender Equality. Ryan and Candace are representing a group that created a film about SDG 13, Climate Action, with a specific focus on plastic pollution. It was interesting that, as I was recording final thoughts for this episode during postproduction, I mistakenly said that Ryan in Candace’s film was focusing on SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Rather than edit this out, I chose to leave it because I think it is a great example of how so many of the Global Goals are interconnected and how when we design solutions we can have a broad impact in our local community and, by sharing our stories, hopefully inspire others to do the same across the globe.

    Episode Summary
As we approach the summer holiday, it is a good time to consider the question in the title of this podcast, and perhaps to think about our own relationships with technology.

On this episode I meet a documentary filmmaker from Western Academy of Beijing. Iris is currently in her junior year and we’re going to be talking about a documentary film that she made for her personal project at the end of gr. 10. For her personal project, Iris decided to give up her smartphone for an entire week, record the experience and turn that into a documentary film. Imagine the challenges that go way beyond losing access to our social media feeds. I love how Iris tells the story and shares her reflections on the experience and the connection to mindfulness that goes beyond her years. Before you listen to this episode, make sure to watch her film that is linked in the show notes.

    Episode Summary
How might we build empathy for people who are forced to move from their home and settle in a new place? How might we create a sense of belonging for refugees? These were the types of questions presented to 9th grade students at Western Academy of Beijing as part of an integrated unit involving a partnership between Design and Individuals & Societies (I&S). Students became more aware of the push and pull factors that lead to migration and the challenges that these pose to people having to relocate in different parts of the world. They then used their knowledge and skills to design solutions to help refugees feel a sense of belonging in their new homes.
