If one word encompasses all that you will need to work on to give yourself the best chance of success as an entrepreneur, it's hearing and saying "no".

I remember standing on a platform at Melbourne's Parliament railway station one evening after another day on another long- term consulting gig aimed at ensuring a large, heavily funded listed company complied with its regulatory obligations. This engagement, like so many before it, was plagued with politics and was painstakingly slow to progress. Often our recommendations to clients would go unheeded and we'd end up making the same recommendations the following year. Each day I found myself standing on that same platform and wondering to myself, 'What did I actually achieve or contribute today?'.

Too many people tell me they're unsure what their passion or purpose is. This isn't because they don't have one. They just haven't found it. Or, more to the point, they haven't been trained to see it.

It will never be the 'right time'. University or work commitments, saving for vacations, children to take care of, mortgages to pay, bills, school fees, physical limitations...and so on. Whatever stage of life you're in, there will always be excuses. Choosing to overcome them by taking action is a choice, and everyone has that choice.

In my teens I was a huge heavy metal fan, I had hair down to my waist and I played guitar in a band called Stentorian, which loosely translates to loud and powerful. One of the metal record stores I used to frequent in Melbourne's CBD was called Metal Mayhem and outside it had a quote emblazoned above it's door that read "heavy metal is not a fashion statement, it is a way of life".
Fast forward 20 years and today, I draw paralells between the undying passion and devotion that heavy metal fans have for the genre - a testament to bands like Iron Maiden selling over a hundred million records with zero radio play - with the commitment and devotion that an entrepreneur must have to their craft.
Today, I solemnly believe that entrepreneurship is not a job title, it is a state of mind and a way of life.

I was summoned to Human Resources on the 15th floor of a centralSydney office tower in the city's iconic Martin Place precinct, home toMacquarie Bank, the country's largest investment bank. Earlier thatday I was featured in a one-page article in The Australian newspaper,in which I was referred to as an employee of the bank. Only it wasn'tfor anything I'd done for the bank. HR wanted to know how thismedia attention had come about. What a loaded question! My mindshifted back almost 12 months...
