Did living through 2020 give us 20/20 vision?? Probably not. But in many areas of life, there are certainly some elements that became more in focus...at least if we know where to look. Join us as we take a quick look back at the strangest year ever and how to approach the challenges ahead. You'll also understand more on why we needed to take a necessary break from the podcast because of unforeseen events, too. I think by the time we've spent a few minutes together you'll be encouraged with a few more tools (maybe even 5 stones and a slingshot) to help you navigate this thing called 'life' and slay a few of your own 'giants'.
As always, thanks for your support! And please share with your network of family, friends, and associates you think might enjoy our podcast.

“No Judgement!” Ever heard that phrase thrown around? We use it to assure people that we aren’t going to scrutinize or criticize them. So no judgement here! Let’s use the word Evaluation instead. For our purposes it represents a more objective approach to seeing the way things are, then using our findings to improve our ability.
Welcome to the final installment of the ESSENTIALS episodes. Episodes 1-9 covered all the critical elements needed to super charge and refine your speaking ability. (2:40) In this installment, we will learn the art of evaluation to tie it all together moving forward. If we don’t learn to self-evaluate and improve how we speak, we’re holding ourselves back. Quick and consistent self-evaluation will catapult your speaking success.
We unwrap 3 elements of learning effective speaking evaluation. (3:50) Download the EYP EVALUATION GUIDE below. It’s a great way to do proper evals of other speakers and your own presentations. Use it and reuse it as many times as you’d like!
1- OTHERS. (4:01) The Evaluation of OTHERS. Now that you’ve studied the ‘bones’ of great talks, it’s time to study those in speakers and communicators you admire and respect. Learning to identify those tools in the talks and speeches of others will help you discover those tools in yourself.
2- SELF. (7:00) Learn to unpack your own talks. You’ll find when you can pat yourself on the back for the things you do right, and then send yourself to a corner for a timeout for the things you need to improve…OK, just kidding. But learning what NOT to do is part of the process.
3- REALTIME FEEDBACK and STRATEGIC PIVOTING. (10:40) When you finally begin to reach the area of true “gear shifting” mid-talk because you sense a need in the audience, then you’ve entered a refined area of excellence. Only the best and experienced develop this ability. This needs to be your goal.

The 9th installment in the premiere 10 ESSENTIALS episodes. NEGATIVITY is alive and well in our message bombarded culture. If you allow it, negativity can become a cancer on your speaking ability (04:15); a barrier between you and your mission. There are 3 sources of NEGATIVITY we cover and remedy in today’s program.
1- Self-Talk can be a subtle deceiver that quickly compromises your effectiveness. The current trend of “positive thinking” and “you are great in and of yourself” is deceptive for every communicator. It leads to a false sense of self. The reality? You do have faults. You do have hangups. You are not perfect. In realizing this truth, you take yourself off the hook of the expectation of self-perfection.
An honest and realistic image of 'you' encourages the True You when communicating. To fill in the faults and gaps, you need to acknowledge you have a Creator who gives you life and purpose. When you recognize this, you can then realize a plan for you to impact the world. Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven Life is on to something. When you maintain this purposeful perspective, it frees you to lean in to your created self and draw your confidence from your Creator.
Moses’ shrinking in his inadequacy is great example of God working through your imperfections (07:45).
2- Negativity from Others (10:59). Words matter. Hurtful words and critical expressions are permeating society. And they are flung at our personal confidence each and every day. Consider the source and move ahead in healthy confidence. (13:15 )Ed Sheeran said, “…the key to failure is trying to please everyone.” You will never please everyone with your ability. When you lean in to that fact, you move ahead in Creator-Confidence and put the criticism in it’s rightful place. (14:20) Trust your Creator to fill in the gaps of your weaknesses and imperfections. Be the “self” God made you to be.
3- (16:00) Negativity by Overwhelm. It’s perfect to not be perfect. Recognize that you have a special “calling” to be in that place. Own it. Embrace it. If perfection is a problem for you, learn to see it for what it is and rethink your motive. Offer what you have and offer it fully!
Phil 4:8 “…think about these things”.
(18:25) Download the checklist to prep every time you speak.

Helping you deliver life-changing moments to the people you serve every time you speak.
Welcome to Episode 008 of the ESSENTIALS series. In this episode we focus on one element every message needs to help you CONNECT with your audience.
(01:10) Before we begin, DOWNLOAD the free Quick Guide PDF HERE: PDF Quick Guide to Creating a Talk that Sticks
(01:27) It's not possible to cover in one short podcast everything needed to create a great message or sermon. So today we will focus on ONE critical element. It's a wonderful technique that will endear you to, and build trust with your listeners.
First, choose the subject of your message and then refine it down to one focused objective. Create a concise sentence that defines your objective. This will rule the rest of your message creation. Then gather all the elements and items your talk will potentially contain. Next you will trim, trim, trim and then organize your elements in the order you will deliver them.
3 major areas of an orators speech were defined by Aristotle in ancient Greece. Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. (see the Venn diagram in the PDF.) Today we concentrate on the Pathos element (03:19). It's the emotional and feeling part of your talk. (08:12) Without Pathos, your talk will not sink in and stick with your listener as well as it could. (08:56) To do this, use a story, experience, or memory of your own life.
The use of FEELINGS in your message often times gets a bad rap. (10:29) They are often the glue that cements the truth into your audience. (13:50) Your listeners begin to know you, then trust you.
(14:55) Dennis Agajanian, a long time Christian Musician, is a master of communication from the stage. He could quickly read an audience and make changes to his message or concert accordingly.
(16:35) Start cataloguing your life memories. Write them down and tag them; use voice memos on your phone or apps like Evernote to reference them.
People buy the feeling they hope to get in a purchase, or any other life changing decision. (23:20)
(24:18) Thank you for the notes and emails. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We'd love to help.
(25:00) Many other resources are available all across the internet to help you with ideation and content curation for your sermons and messages. i.e.: www.life.church www.sermonspice.com www.sermonsearch.com www.sermon.net and Google can find you many more, along with just listening and referencing your favorite speakers, pastors and communicators messages online.

The 7th program in the premiere 10 ESSENTIALS episodes. In this installment, we touch on how critical your PRESENCE or body language is to rocking your talk or sermon (00:45)
(02:40). Research proves the connection between the “non-verbal” parts of your speaking. Most people call this body language. It basically includes all the visual aspects of your talk beyond the words you speak.
For example, imagine the scene of a speaker folding their arms while they speak to you (03:37).
3 Non-Verbal tips you need to try and include every time you speak:
1- Always use the universal 'word' you never speak…your SMILE. An authentic and personal smile. How to make your smile the best version it can be. (04:28). A smile has 2 immediate effects on your talk. Micro expressions become a very important part of your subconscious process as well. How do actors convey authentic non-verbals effectively? Use your SMILE as a powerful opening of your next message. (07:09)
2- (09:37) Own and define your stage or platform space. Walk it physically prior to your talk, or at least during soundcheck. It prepares you mentally and emotionally and preps your body to feel comfortable in that defined space.
3- (11:44) Deliver your Call To Action near the end of your talk to one person, front and center.
(13:13) These kinds of non-verbal elements applied with excellence will bring your sermon, speech or talk to a much higher level. Pay attention to your body language and learn to use it.

Helping you deliver life-changing moments to the people you serve every time you speak.
Your personal history often creates barriers to your effectiveness as a communicator. How do you overcome those past experiences that seem to chain up your personality and so often hold you back from being completely free to express yourself and be content with YOU?
What kind of personality do you have? How much baggage holds you back?
(01:45) Each one of us needs to be good at Self-Assessment. We have a tendency to be hypercritical when we self-evaluate. (02:50). There is a plethora of personality tests that claim to help us uncover the mysteries of who we truly are. But there's a big danger in their misuse. (03:42)
One thing will never change: change happens throughout our lives. You are also a little bit of each type of personality trait. (05:15) Learn to stretch yourself. (06:00)
(06:28) Jordan B Peterson challenges us to always have an area of chaos in our lives that is stretching us. The Bible is a record of men and women in the throes of change. Embrace change in your life.
Joel toured the world on stages with the likes of Billy Graham the evangelist. He never envisioned those experiences as a young man. No one knows when they will be asked to take a platform.
Always be seeking a certain amount of chaos in your life; step into areas of discomfort to keep you on the edge of personal development. (09:24)

Helping you deliver life-changing moments to the people you serve every time you speak.
In this episode, we discuss the timing and pacing of your delivery. This element is critical to adding “speaking spice” to your message for a gourmet presentation. (02:45)
Speaking too quickly undercuts the listeners absorption of your message. It quickly creates fatigue in your audience (03:05). Speed speakers feel pressured to get the message blurted out. Even what they consider a pause is barely a space for a breath.
A delivery too slow and drawn out does the same thing, except your audience is instead bored and antsy (03:48). Barack Obama was so careful in his word selection, that he belabored his audience and they missed much of the emotion intended in many of his impromptu interviews.
Less than ideal pacing is typically too fast or too slow. To master timing means to vary your pacing according to the intended meaning (04:45). Escalating your pace abruptly or slowing down dramatically has powerful effects to your listener. Sometimes add a power pause. Use the drama it creates to your advantage.
3 takeaways on timing: (06:25)
1- Listen to or create a recording of yourself. Listen back, being self-aware of your current habits.
2- Practice doing the opposite of your current tendency, even if you feel your pacing is good. Mix up your approach with your timing and pacing. Tell a story using this instructions.
3- Practice using a dramatic pause in your talk. Plan it into your next message. Wrap life-change around that pause.

Helping you deliver life-changing moments to the people you serve every time you speak.
This is the second of three critical elements that make up your unique voice. (34:00) This episode is all about the dynamics of your vocal sound or what some refer to as the volume or projection of your voice.
Everyone comes from a different place (01:30)
What are voice dynamics? (01:55)
(02:47) You need to mix it up. Speaking spice makes your voice much more flavorful.
(03:56) If you have the attention of your audience for a few minutes in the middle of daily message and media inundation, you should feel blessed!
You have certain natural dynamics that you use in your everyday conversation (04:36)
Four main areas in your voice dynamics loud to soft make you much more interesting to the listener (05:38) One thing dynamic projection will do is carry passion or courage of convictions.(08:28)
Listen to your recorded voice. Is your voice spicy and dynamic? Does it vary enough? Self evaluation is very important in this speaking journey. You need to rehearse to attain excellence.

Your actual VOICE can deliver and control emotion intertwined with your message.
(01:35) Many people don’t like the sound of their own voice. When they hear recordings of it, they wince and furl their brow.
(02:10) Your voice is perfect for you.
This is the first of three essentials about your unique voice. (04:03) This episode is all about maximizing the pitch of your vocal sound, (04:31) or what many refer to as the tonal range of your voice.
A wide range is more stimulating to listen to and holds attention much better. (05:32) Listen to your recorded voice. Is your pitch range wide? Does it vary enough? Self evaluation is very important in this speaking journey.
(07:42) Problems involving your range. Monotone and upspeak can be solved.
Expanding your range. (10:30) Reading for children has a typical trait of a wider vocal range.

One of the greatest fears in the human experience is the fear of speaking in front of others. (01:03) Research shows it’s been one of the top fears for many years. Fear can elicit and reveal insecurities and tension that hold us back from sharing the most important parts of ourselves and our messages. Joel breaks down some of the sources and causes of our dread. (02:02)
Joel Weldon shares the most important overall attitude shift that offers you true freedom to be yourself. (04:57) MISSION>me is a value statement to carry into the rest of your life. Social fears are common to all of us at certain times in our lives. No one is immune, but it is completely possible for every one of us to overcome the FEAR by converting it into EXCITEMENT. The number one root cause is our fear of being rejected and the fear of our listeners not ‘liking’ or approving of my message and delivery. When we put mental priority on the MISSION>me value statement and we focus on caring about the lives of our listeners.
The nerves will never completely disappear. But by refocusing our attitude and purpose onto the audience, we eventually draw tremendous pleasure and excitement by watching our listeners respond to our messages.
Eye contact is just one small technique of many to help you focus on your audience’s benefit. (12:05) Our comprehensive online course called Riveting: the Speaking Voice Makeover is in the works. Sign up for updates on the empoweryourplatform.com website.
Your MISSION should be at the tip of your tongue and the forefront of your thoughts. This applies to every speaking opportunity that comes your way. (14:55) Your servant attitude will quickly become the positive target of your nervous energy.
