In this episode, Elin & Christina sit down and have a conversation with Karina Saechao, a Speech & Language Pathologist and now a doctoral student in the Child Language Doctoral Program at the University of Kansas. While working in the public school system, Karina observed a gap in the knowledge and understanding of practitioners as related to how to identify, assess, determine eligibility for and treat language disorders in children from marginalized backgrounds. After observing the lack of adequate services provided in her community, Karina established a private speech language pathology practice focused on serving and supporting children and families from these communities. Karina’s research interests are in the areas of dialectal variations, primarily African American English; child language acquisition, and language impairments.
