If you weren’t aware, May is National Foster Care Month and this topic is near and dear to my heart because I myself am a former foster parent and adopted my daughter through the foster care system. Today I want to empower providers and celebrate foster care in and of itself and focus on how to really better yourself to be able to provide better care.

The youth that we serve are extremely important because whether they’re in foster care or not, they’re going to be the leaders in our world one day. They were dealt a hand that they had no control over and foster care providers are brave and important, and not recognized nearly enough.

How can foster families get the support they need when there’s so little from the state?

• Build your own support system
• Prioritize self-care so you’re not burning yourself at both ends
• Get involved in a community of like-minded people who understand what you’re going through

If you still value the work that you do and see a mission in being a foster parent, we have to do whatever we can to preserve you and bring your attention to self-care so you can continue to do the work in the most effective and fulfilling way you can.
