I’m excited to visit with a client of mine, Rontoya. Rontoya is a CNA who got into community housing through the unlicensed route. In that situation, basically all you are is a landlord providing the housing and nothing else. She actually had to go through an investigation for trying to help her residents with more than just housing. After trying different ways to get everything done without getting in trouble, she figured it was time to just play ball and get licensed.

Rontoya was one of the original cohort for my Startup Provider Program so in this episode we’ll talk about where Rontoya came from, the work we had to do together, and where she is now as a result of our work in the Startup Provider Program. I believe that businesses that have highly effective leadership will outperform businesses that don’t. Unfortunately, leadership skills aren’t at the top of the list of things to learn when starting a business. Even the professional organizations I’m part of will focus on the regulatory side of things, bringing on more team members, growing revenue, and those sort of things, but how does one become an effective leader?

There are several elements you need when developing the necessary leadership skills to improve yourself and pass on to your team members. The empathy piece is so important because as care providers, we don’t have the luxury of completely separating personal issues from work. There will be times when you need to help guide an employee or team member through some hard times so that they can thrive in the company and still provide top notch care.

If you want to be a highly effective leader, with teams that are growing and thriving, your mindset needs to be in the right place. It’s important to check in with your own wellbeing and to check in with your team so that they know that you care.

You need to have the support system in place before it’s an emergency situation and before you hit burnout. The youth you’re trying to serve need you to be whole and thriving.

• Central communication hub

Which systems you need right now depends on what you want for the long term. Do your research and integrate them one at a time, and find what works best for you.

We knew that we would have to pay back those stimulus payments from 2020-2021, and here we are with high unemployment, high interest rates, and high inflation. A recession means different things in different industries, but the good news is that people will always need care, no matter what the economy is doing.

However, there are still things that we need to put in place to make sure your business stays healthy through a recession, such as:

• Diversifying your services
• Keeping a close eye on your cash flow
• Building strong relationships and networking with other care providers
• Embracing technology and the streamlining it brings to your business
• Maintaining a good quality of care during this time

The Cares industry is a safe industry to get into during a recession, but you still need a solid business plan. Stay tuned for part 2 next week, where we will go deeper into how to really build a recession proof business.

This episode is primarily for providers who provide housing for individuals and provide care 24/7, but there are some good tidbits for everyone here.  In the cares industry, it’s not a matter of if there will be some sort of emergency, but when. When you’re dealing with human lives and caring for real people, there will be leaks, fires, broken windows, etc.

It doesn’t do anyone any good to wallow and try to place blame when there’s a crisis to be dealt with. You would’ve had to put together a disaster plan in order to get your facility license, but that’s likely not going to be comprehensive enough for every emergency situation. As the leader in your agency, your staff will be looking to you for direction and it’s incredibly important that you know what to do when disaster strikes.

I’ve had to deal with this myself recently, so in this episode I’ll go over the process I had to go through in order to make sure that my clients were still cared for while the necessary repairs were being made on my facility.

If you weren’t aware, May is National Foster Care Month and this topic is near and dear to my heart because I myself am a former foster parent and adopted my daughter through the foster care system. Today I want to empower providers and celebrate foster care in and of itself and focus on how to really better yourself to be able to provide better care.

The youth that we serve are extremely important because whether they’re in foster care or not, they’re going to be the leaders in our world one day. They were dealt a hand that they had no control over and foster care providers are brave and important, and not recognized nearly enough.

How can foster families get the support they need when there’s so little from the state?

• Build your own support system
• Prioritize self-care so you’re not burning yourself at both ends
• Get involved in a community of like-minded people who understand what you’re going through

If you still value the work that you do and see a mission in being a foster parent, we have to do whatever we can to preserve you and bring your attention to self-care so you can continue to do the work in the most effective and fulfilling way you can.
