It’s important to make the decision to start your business, but it takes a lot more than that. There’s more you need to know to get it started with a solid foundation.

The first hurdle is market research. It’s not that people don’t want to do the research, but that the research is too narrow or they don’t know how to interpret the data. It takes time, but it’ll be worth it when you have everything lined up.

While waiting for the application to get approved, look over the marketing and build the momentum that will get clients placed as soon as you are licensed.

When I broke into this business, there were a lot of things that I found out that nobody had told me. This is a very tight-lipped industry anyway, and there’s a lot that wouldn’t have made sense if they had told me.

Starting out, I had no idea what Community Hab even was, much less that there was so much variety within it. Just know that you can break into the care industry without starting a licensed assisted living or group home.

I didn’t realize how important the mission of the agency was and how it helps you to steer the ship. It shows up in how you run your business, your marketing, and how you show up for your clients, and anyone you hire needs to buy into your vision or they won’t be a good fit.

Not all clientele that are presented are going to be the right fit for your agency. It’s not necessarily about the clients themselves, but each client has a care team and they might not all work agree with your approach. Maybe the client has a certain need that are outside of your scope of care.

If you’re wanting to break in to the business but the models you’ve seen don’t really add up, or the state website isn’t being very helpful, that’s a very common place to be. You might get some help from your local network, but it won’t be enough to make sense. 

Many people get started with the unlicensed route because it’s a bit easier to start up, but it’s a lot more hustle for not enough income. I don’t expect anyone to do this work for free, but there is an entry point for everyone once you know all your options.

I encourage you to find a mentor that can help show you the different options so you can make an informed decision for yourself.

The next two pillars are Excellent Customer Service and Mindset and Community. In general, I find that customer service in the care industry is seriously lacking. This can work to your advantage because, even if someone has a negative experience, whatever you can add to your customer service experience is going to help you stand out.

That said, because we’re always taking care of everyone else, we tend to neglect ourselves. Taking care of yourself is more than mantras and bubble baths. You need to surround yourself with a like-minded community that understands your job. That’s why my Facebook community is so important. 7 Figure Impact

What are you doing to stand out from the others that provide the same services as you? When there’s a list of providers, what stands out about you so that you are top of mind for those placement specialists?

Are you marketing consistently? If you only marketed once or twice, what good is that doing you? Marketing is truly the lifeblood of your business and if you’re not getting your services filled by your ideal clients, then something needs to shift.

So often, I hear from people wanting to get started but they’re struggling to find information, they don’t know where to start, and they’re not sure what they really want to do. Many times people will get stuck on the traditional licensed assisted living model without considering anything else. In this episode, I’ll walk you through the 3 things that you need to figure out when first getting started.

1. Before you even get started, know who you are wanting to serve. There are different requirements for different populations and you need to have this figured out first. This can change later on if you want to pivot, but you need a starting point.
2. What service are you looking at providing? What do you actually want to provide for people? If you’d like a little more clarity here, revisit Episode 3: Types Of Care.
3. Who do you have experience working with? Write down all of it, whether you think it’s related or not. This will be a good guide as you look through the requirements in your state.

In this episode we’re talking about the most common mistakes that providers make when they aren’t making the money they desire.  Oftentimes when people get started, they see a big need in their community and fill it expecting to immediately find tons of perfect clients. Truth is, even if there is a big need, clients do not fall from the sky. These are the most common mistakes I see.

1. Market research didn’t happen properly and the provider is flying blind to what the community actually needs. Many aspiring providers will try to copy what an existing provider is doing, but they don’t have enough inside knowledge on what that company actually does to be able to see the same success.
2. They don’t realize that marketing is the lifeblood of their agency. In order to get placements for your services, your business needs to stand out and the community needs to know about it.
3. They’re not the best provider. The quality of care and quality of life for their clientele isn’t up to par. Even if the other two elements are in place, a bad reputation can wreck it all.

So many providers are just so surprised that they’re not making the income or impact they want. With correct preparation and understanding of the industry, you can get a good start. If you keep impact in the forefront of your operations and mission, the sky is the limit.

There’s always an underlying notion that care providers shouldn’t make good money from the care they provide. In this episode I plan to debunk that idea. 

We need to make money in this business in order to operate. You have to pay the bills, facility, food, all of the things that it takes to operate a business. 

You have to be able to pay your care team and pay them well. 

YOU deserve to make good money in this business. Your intentions are good, you’ve done the work, you’re on this journey to make an impact, so why shouldn’t you be compensated? You are providing a needed service, just like anyone else. But, beware of the slippery slope. If you are making great money but your staff isn’t paid well, your clients aren’t getting premier care, you aren’t meeting regulatory requirements, something needs to change.
