  • How to Stop People Pleasing and Start Taking Care of Yourself

No matter what you do, you’ll never make everyone happy.

Considering other people’s feelings and treating them with kindness is something we should all strive to do. But sacrificing our wellbeing to make others happy is not. When you compromise who you are and what you need, people-pleasing has crossed the line from kind and generous to self-abandonment — not being your authentic self because you’re afraid others will disapprove, criticise, or reject you.

In this episode, I touch on people pleasing signs and offer practical solutions to help you stop people pleasing.

According to Psychologists, the following 15 signs indicate you’re a people-pleaser

How many signs of people-pleasing do you recognise in yourself?

    1. You want everyone to like you.
    2. You over-apologise.
    3. You crave validation.
    4. You let people take advantage of you.
    5. You feel guilty or mean when you set boundaries.
    6. You’re afraid of conflict.
    7. You’ve always been a “good girl” (or guy); a rule-follower.
    8. You think self-care is optional.
    9. You feel tense, anxious, or on-edge.
    10. You expect yourself to be perfect and hold yourself to high standards.
    11. You put yourself last and don’t know how to ask for what you need.
    12. You’re sensitive to criticism.
    13. You think your feelings, needs, opinions, and ideas aren’t as important as other people’s
    14. You're a "fixer"; you hate to see anyone hurt, afraid, sad, or uncomfortable.
    15. You resent always being asked to do more and wish people would consider your feelings and needs.

    16. Remember, you can’t make everyone happy. You can fool yourself for a while, just like I did. But at some point, what you really want and who you really are will catch up with you. If you give yourself permission to pursue what you really want, you can be more at peace with yourself and your life!.

      • Strategies and Practical Tips to Improve Self-Confidence

The best way to boost your self-confidence is to open yourself up to positive new experiences and allow yourself to succeed.

If you have low self-confidence, you probably don’t like taking risks—whether those risks involve physical activity, going for a new job or promotion, talking to someone you like, or just trying a new activity. It is a classic catch-22: your low self-confidence encourages you to avoid doing the exact things that would help you build up your self-confidence.

If uninterrupted, this can lead to an ever-deepening spiral of low self-confidence; you don’t have any exciting new successes, so your self-confidence is even lower, so you feel even less like trying new things.

Of course, the most important thing you can do to build your self-confidence is to get some success experiences under your belt—no matter how small—In this episode, I discuss other things you can try as well.

          • Finding Me by Viola Davis
          • This book is a lot of things, and all of them feel genuine Viola. Are you dark skinned? She tells you what she’s seen and what she feels as a dark-skinned Black woman. And after making it out of a life of poverty and into a successful career against the odds, she realises she doesn’t know how to really love romantically, or how to be intimately loved. So, then she faces that.

It's a great read that gives hope, encouraging readers to look back and embrace childhood dreams or failures, let go of shame, and move forward to become the best version of ourselves.

If you have the opportunity to listen to it as an audiobook, I highly recommend! It is narrated by Viola herself and she is a phenomenal voice actor, as you would expect.

          • Strategies and Actionable Principles to Boost Motivation

Knowing how to stay motivated can mean the difference between reaching your goals and staying stuck.

It’s easy to feel excited and motivated when starting something new, but that inspiration begins to fade once the novelty of an experience wears off.

Then there are days where you feel exhausted, with zero motivation to even look at your to-do list. You feel unproductive and have no desire to do anything. So how do you push past that feeling to find the motivation to be productive even when it’s the last thing you feel like doing? In this episode, I discuss different principles you can put into practice when you need to accomplish your to-do list but struggle to find the energy or motivation to do so.

              Additional notes

              Dopamine and motivation

Dopamine is closely related to motivation and desire. It’s the chemical that encourages us to seek rewards, motivating us into action. It’s powerfully involved in shifting our mindset towards success, and recognising possible accomplishments.

In an episode of The Huberman Lab Podcast, Stanford neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, substantiates this:

“Dopamine has all these incredible properties of increasing the amount of energy in our bodies and minds, and our ability to focus.”

If you’ve ever met someone who is extremely motivated and driven and compared them to someone who is completely indifferent and unmotivated, you’re seeing a difference in the level of dopamine in their systems.

By learning how to manage your dopamine levels, you can dramatically impact your motivation.

When you add insights from psychology about what makes people more likely to stay motivated and work through challenges – you have powerful fuel for success.

              • Building Resilience and Inner Strength in the Face of Adversity

Resilience is the ability to cope with and recover from setbacks. People who remain calm in the face of disaster have resilience.

A resilient person is someone who has strong coping skills and is able to marshall their available resources, ask for help when needed, and find ways to manage the situation they are facing. Studies indicate that People with resilience are able to use their skills and strengths to respond to life's challenges, which can include those related to:

                • Death of a loved one
                  • Financial issues
                  • Illness
                  • Job loss
                  • Medical emergencies
                  • Natural disasters
                  • Instead of falling into despair or hiding from issues by using unhealthy coping strategies, resilient people face life's difficulties head-on.

People with resilience do not experience less distress, grief, or anxiety than other people do. Instead, they use healthy coping skills to handle such difficulties in ways that foster strength and growth, often emerging stronger than they were before.

This episode delves into the practice of meditations and discovers 7 timeless life lessons that have helped me to develop resilience and inner strength with practical advice for dealing with difficult situations but also hopefully inspire you to cultivate a more resilient mindset in your daily life. It also covers some of the strategies that people can use to become more resilient.
