Luna steps into the elevator at the Moultrie Hotel, presses the button for floor twelve, and instead of the hallway she remembers, the doors open onto a street of deep snow under a starless sky. A town called Stillwater, population forty-two, where every lamp is dark and every face at every window is watching the same spot. The snow hasn't fallen in weeks, but the drifts are up to the eaves. She walks the main street past the barbershop with its striped pole still turning, past the diner where the coffee urn is full and the pie is still warm, past the library where the card catalog has a drawer labeled 'Residents, Deceased' that nobody pulled. She meets a woman on the porch of the white house at the end of the road, a woman whose hands are folded in her lap and whose eyes are fixed on something Luna cannot see. The woman says 'You're early' and 'He isn't finished yet' and 'You can wait inside if you like' but Luna knows better than to cross a threshold she wasn't invited over. She waits on the porch steps instead, watching the woman watch the empty intersection, and when the woman finally turns her head, her smile is the smile of someone who has been waiting a very long time.

Luna recalls the night the elevator stopped at a floor that didn't exist—a floor with its own strange world, a woman in a blue dress who spoke of unfinished business, and a door she was not yet ready to open. Set in the Moultrie Hotel, a decaying Art Deco building in the small town of Jericho, deep in autumn. A story about the spaces between floors, the people who wait there, and the choice to leave before you disappear.

It was the summer of 2006, just outside a town called Verity, New Mexico. I was working the graveyard shift at the Starlight Motel, a place that had seen better decades. The ice machine in the breezeway had been broken for years, but that night it started humming at exactly 3:00 AM. Then it began dispensing something that wasn't ice. This is a story about the last guest in room 8, the sound of something heavy tumbling in the dark, and what it means to be the only person awake when a place finally remembers what it was built on. No one told me what happened to the night clerk before me. No one had to.

In the autumn of 1997, on a stretch of Route 17 that cuts through nothing but pine and fog, there was a diner called the Glass Moon. It stayed open until four in the morning, and it had one waitress — a woman named Cora who had worked the late shift for eleven years. This is the story of the night a man walked in at 2:47 AM, sat in booth four, and ordered black coffee and a slice of cherry pie he never touched. The night the pie crust bled. The night Cora stopped looking at the clock and started counting the seconds between his breaths. A story about a promise made to someone who had already left, and a diner that never quite let anyone leave the same way they arrived. Told in the hushed, intimate voice of Luna — like a secret passed across a counter at three in the morning.

In October of 2018, on a two-lane stretch of Old State Road 9 outside Elkhorn, a seasonal ditch that runs alongside the asphalt began keeping score. Luna's cousin Vera was the first to notice — a perfect circle of dry gravel in a bed of standing water, counting each passing car with a splash that matched the odometer exactly. By the third night the ditch had learned her plate number, her tire pressure, the exact weight of her foot on the accelerator. Vera called Luna on a Tuesday, voice flat and papery, saying the water had started spelling her name in pebbles. What Luna found when she drove out that weekend — the silence, the tally marks in the mud, the way the ditch widened each time she approached — left her sitting in her own car until dawn, engine off, counting backward from a number she couldn't stop seeing. This is what the water asked for, and what Vera gave.

Luna recalls a quiet evening in the town of Underwood, New Hampshire, where she visited the public library on a snowy December night in 2019. The librarian, a woman named Edith, checked out a book that seemed to have no author, no publication date, and no record of ever being cataloged. As Luna read the book, she found it contained an account of her own childhood, written with precise, impossible detail. The story spirals into a meditation on memories that aren't ours, the weight of words that know too much, and the unsettling sense that some books choose their readers.

On a November night in 1987, Luna's car broke down on the coast road south of Cape Morrow, a town that doesn't appear on most maps. She walked the final mile through fog thick enough to drink, following a beam that wasn't the lighthouse. The keeper was an old woman named Elara who hadn't spoken to anyone in thirty years, but she'd been expecting Luna. The lantern room held charts that showed no coastline, only open water for hundreds of miles. And the light itself—it didn't come from any bulb or flame. Elara said it was a warning. Not for ships. For something that lived in the deep, something that had learned to mimic the fog horns. This is a story about isolation, duty, and the terrible weight of being the one who keeps watch.

June 1987, just outside Carter's Mill, Virginia. A flickering motel sign reads 'Beacon' but the neon is broken into just 'Beacon', the 'B' and 'a' dead. Luna was driving back from a funeral when she stopped at the Beacon Motor Court, a place that looked like it hadn't had a guest in years. The night clerk was a woman named Edith, who didn't seem surprised to see her. Edith gave her a room at the far end, Room 7, and warned her not to turn on the television after midnight. But the television turned on by itself, and it wasn't showing static—it was showing a man, sitting in a chair that looked exactly like the one in Luna's room. He was watching her. The projectionist, Edith called him later, a man who died in 1972 when the motel's old film projector caught fire. He's been projecting his last night over and over, and if you watch too long, you become part of his reel. Luna spent the night with the television unplugged, but in the morning, the cord was plugged in again, and the screen was warm.

It was the last run of the night, the 11:47 out of Pender County. The driver was a woman named Cora, who had worked the route for fourteen years. She knew every curve, every dip, every farmhouse light. But that night, the bus didn't stop at Stillwater Bend. It kept going. The road kept unspooling through fog, past crossroads that didn't exist on any map. One by one, the passengers noticed the houses were wrong—porch lights where there should be empty fields, mailboxes with names they didn't recognize. And then the bus passed a woman standing at a gate, and her face was the face of someone Cora had buried three years ago. A quiet, slow-spiral story about roads that remember who you lost, and the kindness of forgetting until it's too late.

It was late October, the kind of cold that gets into your bones before you feel it, when Luna found herself at the Serenity Point Rest Area off Route 17 in upstate New York. The place was almost empty—just a few trucks and a station wagon that seemed to have been there too long. The restrooms were locked, the vending machines flickered, and the air smelled of wet leaves and something else, something metallic. She met a woman named Cora who was waiting for a ride that never came, who spoke of a child she had lost in the lake years ago. But it was the note she pressed into Luna's hand—written in crayon on a paper towel—that made the cold settle deeper. The words were simple: 'She tells me I drowned. But I didn't.' And Luna understood, as the station wagon's headlights cut through the fog, that some stories wait at the edge of the water, patient as stones, and they do not let go.
