Back again with round 2 of Academic Agony Aunts! The series where Ryan and Sam sell themselves as the Gurus of academic philosophy and provide wisdom like no other to those seeking new avenues of knowledge in their research lives. And yes, before you complain. Ryan and Sam are 100% qualified to answer these queries...The lads delve into the current system of publication culture between academics, how to be a good public speaker, how to stay motivated on long-haul academic projects and much more...
As usual, the lads enter the empty space in between every now and then, talking about Sams's French speaking exam back in year 11 and Ryans's cheating ways in exam season.
Ryan and Sam give their takes on what's making headlines and creating conversation in the world of newly published science and research. They wade through the platter of breaking stories from AI that can identify cheating students and plagiarism, rats that are now dancing to music, a diabetes medication that is getting adopted in the world of celebrities for weight loss, AI that can tell if someone is sleep deprived and Space X's rocket ship shenanigans, it's all discussed here. As per every episode, Sam and Ryan get lost in the Empty Space Inbetween every now and then, mainly talking about their love for Paolo Nutini.

Taking a side step from episode 7 on electric cars, Ryan and Sam turn their attention to the newly emerging world of self-driving cars! The guys delve into the six levels of self-driving vehicles, the spurious advertisement of these features, subscription-based models currently offered by big car conglomerates and the major ethical issues surrounding AI-powered cars, such as "who is to blame when these vehicles crash?". Ryan and Sam, as per usual, take some detours and talk about Ryans's love for drama, Sam's role as a wise man in a Christmas nativity, and their love for Spanish tapas.
Electric Cars! 2030 and all must go is what the UK government is saying, but what do Ryan and Sam think of the practicality of this in the real world?
The lads delve into the UK and European cut-off date for the production of petrol cars, the feasibility of electric cars for low-income individuals and families, the practicality of charging these vehicles if the whole UK had one, the ethical implications of mining resources in poor parts of the world to create batteries for these supposedly green and ethical vehicles and how dam right ugly they are at the lower end of the cost spectrum. As usual, The lads get into the empty space inbetween a bit too much, talking about Ryan's new best friend, Man United legend Wes Brown and Sam's new best friend, Thundercat!
PS: The documentary Sam mentioned on Cobalt is actually a book, not a documentary. Check it out here.

Everyone loves a good scroll on TikTok, Instagram reels, and a browse on amazon for their next buy, but what are these companies doing with your data and are you aware of what they are doing? Big Data is the vast volumes of data collected through numerous means by large conglomerates. Ryan and Sam discuss the benefits of "Big Data" and how it can progress learning, connectivity, and productivity; they also discuss its dangers to individuals and populations when care isn't taken by either the individual or the companies collecting and using your data. As expected, in between all this serious conversation, nonsense does occur from time to time as Sam tells us about his knack for making up words in a Shakespearian way.
Ryan and a team of academics at Liverpool John Moores University have recently worked to create the "Index Index: The Global Index for Freedom of Expression" alongside the non-profit organisation "Index on Censorship". Censorship, freedom of expression, freedom to protest, freedom of the media (and many more) combine to create a free society. Ryan and Sam jump into these issues through the lens of machine learning, investigating how ML is used to understand censorship globally to help liberate individuals from different corners of the globe. As usual, some nonsense conversations rear their heads between all the seriousness of censorship, like Ryans's excursion to sneak into a happy hour podcast afterparty...
In this week's episode, Ryan and Sam discuss the world of natural language processing, specifically, the very new and topical service of ChatGPT. They get into its benefits and drawbacks, its greater use in society, the dangers that may become present if regulated incorrectly and the revolution it's bringing on the internet. As usual, there's plenty of other nonsense in between, as it wouldn't be the Empty Space Inbetween without it.
Ryan and Sam delve into the topical realm of Athletes' Heart. Join them as they discuss its causes, the application of machine learning to this field and well-known cases in the media of athletes suffering from athletes heart such as Fabrice Muamba and Christian Eriksen. As usual, some nonsense is always discussed in between, such as Sam's ultimate sandwich, Ryan's three must-have dinner party guests, and the worst jobs the pair have ever had.
Welcome to the Empty Space Inbetween...
Ryan and Sam delve into their backstory, discussing why they started the Empty Space Inbetween Podcast, what interests them about research and science, how they met, their paths to PhD programs, and general surrounding nonsense.
