The team is in Dresden Germany today visiting two EMS companies: Deltec Electronics and Cicor. Dieter provides background about Deltec's management team, the type of PCBA they produce, their skills in industrial engineering, and how they manage the risk of working with start-ups. The visit to the Cicor facility provided insights into that company's acquisition strategy and the current business situation of the Dresden facility.
The 2023 Europe Tour is winding down and the two reflect on what's left.
Eric and Dieter recorded this podcast from the Czech Republic where they are preparing for their next day of meetings. They reflect on visits to two EMS companies that specialize in the automotive sector, Melecs in Austria and Videoton in Hungary.
They discuss the background of the two companies, type of design capabilities they saw on their tour, the structure of the companies, the way they go about working with customers throughout the product development cycle, and much more.

Eric and Dieter discuss their visits to SG Automotive in Slovenia and BECOM in Austria. For anyone that thought all EMS are the same, this tour disproves that thought dramatically.
The two discuss the level of automation at SG Automotive and the challenges of competing internationally; their customer base, the brands they support, the history of the company and its CEO, the potential for growth and more.
The two then travel north across the border to Austria to visit BECOM. Dieter provides the background for this well-established family owned facility, the value proposition, its design engineering prowess as an ODM, its global footprint, examples of the company's innovative solutions, and much more.

In this podcast, Eric and Dieter are in Slovenia, reporting on their trip to Austria where they met with executives from Ginzinger Electronics Systems and Digital Elektronik GmbH. They met with the CEO of another Austrian EMS, CMS Electronics, at the EMS event in Munich this past week and add their analysis of this company to the discussion.
Austria is Eric's favorite country to visit and the mountains are part of each of these companies' culture. The discussion dives deep into each company's unique capabilities and value proposition. They describe the tour and what they learned and how that fits into the overall industry trend of increasing sophistication of service offerings and capabilities for problem-solving. It's a very good discussion and well worth your time.

Eric and Dieter are in Switzerland where they report on visits to Hengartner Elektronic AG and Variosystems. The first, as Eric comments, represents a smaller EMS company that has developed specialized manufacturing capabilities that are truly unique. They refer to their facility as a product innovation center, and that's the niche they have carved out for themselves.
The second company, Variosystems, is a mid-sized global company that is dissatisfied with the term 'EMS' and suggested they be called an 'electronic service partner' or ESP. Dieter thinks that is pretty accurate. The two report what they learned about Variosystems' strategy of standardized processes across all facilities in all regions, and much more.
They agree the two visits provide a good representation of electronics manufacturing in Switzerland right now.

Eric and Dieter share their thoughts about this first phase of the 2023 tour. They begin by clarifying the terminology: the industry in the UK prefers the term CEM (contract electronic manufacturing) to EMS, so that's what we will use. Dieter starts with the numbers from in4ma's research, and then the two dive into what they have learned from their visits about nuances pertaining to CEM in this region.

Eric interviews Cybord’s CEO Oshri Cohen about their revolutionary AI software solution to inspect all components for defects or counterfeit from images collected from in-line inspection equipment. This cloud-based solution is based on visual analysis of top side and bottom side of all components. It is especially appropriate for regulated industries like aerospace and medical systems, providing a new level of traceability.

The last UK stop on the EMS Tour 2023 finds Eric and Dieter in Crayford at a 'gem of a company', Texcel. Dieter provides background and the reasons for their revenue growth this year; Eric comments that for this company, design is a differentiator, which leads to a discussion of the difference between EMS and ODM, an interesting distinction. The products and end markets served by Texcel reinforce again the challenge of categorizing the sectors of the industry as electronics permeates further into every aspect of modern life.
