Post-interview DiscussionInvolving colleagues from both inside and outside the Institute promotes a healthy exchange of ideas and opinions, and a forum in which to discuss topics that they are all passionate about.
Being frank and honest and expressing opinions that may be controversial on your podcast creates interest and attention around your topic and your podcast.
People love to talk about subjects they are interested in and will often happily appear as a guest on your podcast if you tap into their passion.
Somebody recently declined to guest on Pilar’s 21st Century Work Life podcast because she saw Pilar as a competitor.
Microphone headsets are a good solution for people who are not used to speaking into microphones. The microphone always stays at a fixed distance from the mouth and they allow co-hosts to ‘forget the tech’ and concentrate on the content of the podcast. If you are interested in this solution, here is an example of a decent headset: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-PC-USB-Internet-Telephony/dp/B005HWEZGG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462957667&sr=8-1&keywords=+Sennheiser+Pc8

Craig: You don’t have to be an expert in something in order to start a podcast about it. You just need to be excited about it.
Do podcasters need their own website?
Pilar: It depends! If you’re serious about your podcast and may possibly want to make money from it in the future, you should create a ‘home’ for you podcast and have a website. If you can’t do it yourself, pay someone to do it for you.
You can also just put up a simple blog with basic information.

Post-Interview DiscussionPilar: Dani is a considerate podcaster. He describes what’s happening to his audience, filling in the gap between the visual and audio world.
Craig: Dani shares a lot of personal details in his podcast. As podcasters, how much of our personal life should we be sharing with our audience?
Pilar: How much of your personal stuff and opinions you share with your audience will depend on the type of podcast you´re doing.
Craig: Some podcasters speak about themselves too much in the beginning, especially when they have an informational ‘how to’ podcast.
Pilar: If you’re doing a self-development podcast, the natural thing to do would be to put yourself out there and share personal stuff with the audience.
We should be aware of the effect of what we say on our podcasts, especially when talking about sensitive issues like politics. (And the story of how Pilar lost a listener...)
Craig: Be prepared to polarize your audience and lose listeners if you share strong views on politics, religion etc in your podcast.
An example of a podcast with strong political views: http://www.noagendashow.com/
Pilar: There was a podcast ad on British TV for A Stab in the Dark. http://corporate.uktv.co.uk/podcasts/a-stab-in-the-dark-podcast/

Jeff Jarvis: https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/cunyj_profiles/jeff-jarvis/

It would be wonderful if there was a podcast in Spain that brought real, unbiased news to the public.
Very few journalists have podcasts. Perhaps there is a gap in the market for a seasoned professional independent journalist to start a podcast.
The news is not being researched as well as it used to be. There isn’t enough money in many organisations for good, well-researched journalism. (The book Pilar was trying to remember was Flat Earth News.)
Private Eye have released a podcast: http://www.private-eye.co.uk/eyeplayer/podcast
There is a lot of clickbaiting on the internet. “Clickbait”: (on the Internet) content, especially that of a sensational or provocative nature, whose main purpose is to attract attention and draw visitors to a particular web page.
Pilar is launching a new podcast in January called Evidence Talks. http://www.futureworkcentre.com/what-we-do/education/evidencetalks/
Podcasting is a wonderful vehicle for getting your message out to the world, especially if you teach, like Enrique, or have experience and knowledge in a particular field.
Watch this space! for our interview with Alex from http://www.crecereningles.com/ in 2017.
Thank you for your tweets and your reviews on iTunes.

Pilar: One of the reasons that podcasts might not be so popular is possibly because of people’s relationship with radio. It’s not as strong as in the UK, for example.
Radio was tightly controlled by the state in Franco’s day.
Craig: Are most podcasters producing podcasts for other podcasters? Perhaps this is one reason why podcasting isn’t opening up very fast.
The top shows in itunes seem to be re-purposed Spanish radio shows.
Pilar: Brand awareness sends a strong message when it comes to the podcasts listeners choose to listen to.
Craig: Many people still don’t know what a podcast is and where to find them.
In itunes, listeners are choosing popular branded podcasts from sources they know.
Pilar: Emilcar, Sunne, Joss and others are showing good vision in forming podcast networks. This helps the credibility of podcasts in the network.
There is still a divide and a fear of tech for women. It’s a generational thing.
Craig: The tech doesn’t need to be a barrier for women anymore. Perhaps in 3 or 4 years, the split between men and women in podcasting will be similar to that of TV and radio.
Pilar: What’s the gender split in producing radio and TV?
Salvi started with a personal podcast, Ladrando en La Nube, which is quite a vulnerable thing to do.
People would listen to Salvi’s podcast because they like Salvi, not because they especially wanted to inform themselves about a particular topic.

Pilar: Our avatar has changed since we started. We thought we’d have a predominantly English speaking audience, in fact it’s mostly Spanish.
Craig: Our avatar is probably Spanish speaking podcasters who are interested in what’s happening in the English-speaking world.
Pilar: I like podcasts that have a conversational focus. The rapport in particular between co-hosts will hold Pilar’s attention and interest. Pilar listens mainly for entertainment.
Amy Porterfield: http://www.amyporterfield.com/
Craig: I like podcasts that teach me stuff and make me think.
Pilar: I stop listening to a podcast when the audio quality is below a certain level.

I have stopped my sponsor in my business podcast: http://virtualnotdistant.com/podcasts/ It could be confusing that a business podcast is sponsored by another business. Ask yourself if the sponsor is really necessary, and a good fit, before you take it on.
Craig: Jessica Kupferman’s agency for possible sponsorship: http://www.jkmagency.com/
Pilar: You don’t need a large number of listeners to get a sponsor. It’s the engagement that’s important.
Craig: In the coming year or two, local podcasting could really take off. It might take a few more years for that to affect Spanish podcasting.
