100 years ago today, on May 19, 1920, a gun battle erupted in Matewan, West Virginia, between Baldwin-Felts detectives hired by the local coal mine owners to evict miners from company owned housing (because of the miners’ involvement in U.M.W. activities) and Sheriff Sid Hatfield and his deputies. The battle resulted in the death of the mayor of Matewan and several Baldwin-Felts men, which led eventually to the assassination of Sheriff Hatfield on the courthouse steps, which itself led to the Battle of Blair Mountain.
Today, in an encore presentation, we tell the story of that gun battle in Matewan.
