In this episode of Encounter Cottage Grove, we have the first debate between two community members on the recent controversial post made by South Lane Fire & Rescue's Cheif John Wooten which has put him on administrative leave and the board of the Fire Dept. in a position to take a stance on what is acceptable from leadership & positions of authority. In his post he states; "So I made the comment we should shoot the rioters and someone asked me how I could possibly do that. I replied it depended on distance, wind, temp, humidity and a few other variables but once I had the calculations done it would be a matter of breathing control and trigger squeeze.”
Duane Taddei and Matt Shaft take alternate approaches and 'hash it out' finding common ground as well as opposing viewpoints. The larger context of The Black Lives Matter movement distills in this debate to the discussion of a threat from "Antifa", violent looters and destructive forces into small communities. The topic is magnified and reckoned with as social media peddles in fear-mongering and alarm in times of real unrest.
If you wish to provide written comments to South Lane Fire & Rescue the mailing address is SLCF&R Administration and Headquarters, 233 Harrison Ave Cottage Grove, OR 97424. We did not see an email listed-please comment with that listeners-if you find it. They request you don't call.
From SLF&R:
"The Board is scheduling another Board meeting to address this issue on June 18, 2020 at 7:00 PM. At that time, the Board will enter into an Executive Session under ORS 192.660(2)(b) to discuss the potential discipline of a public officer. We will post the meeting notice and agenda at least 72 hours prior to the meeting. "
