ENCOUNTERING JESUS | WORD AND SONGS
with Sr Lines Salazar, fsp
How do we develop openness to encounter Jesus of Nazareth?
The first step is to accept the fact that he has chosen to encounter each of us. You did not choose me but I chose you (John 15:16). In the reaches of eternity, God the Father has given us to Jesus Christ as his sisters and brothers. This is a sublime dignity that cannot be taken from us by any evil force, though it can be marred by selfish sin. There are three ways to open ourselves to this encounter with an event, a person. The first is the word of God. We find Jesus in the Gospels. The same Holy Spirit who shaped Jesus’ humanity also shapes the word of God in the Gospels. So we take the Gospels, reading them with an open heart. The word of God is a living word, and each time we turn to it with an open heart, we find there the living truth. We find there a human being who was born and grew up surrounded by other men and women, who worked and played, and who always did what the Father wanted done.
The second way of encountering Jesus is thru the Church, among the People of God. We encounter Jesus personally in belonging actively in the Church. This place usually includes the parents and siblings and relatives he gave to us. It includes the teachers we had and the pastors. It is built in on our race and language. This is the place where we could sing “Holy God” and feel like an angel. Belonging in the Church penetrates our city life and our work. When we find Jesus in this place, we find him waiting for us with open arm.
The third way we encounter Jesus is by helping others in need. Jesus said clearly: whatever we have done to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Jesus chose to identify himself with the poor and needy. Reaching out to them is not for the sake of a good feeling and cheap grace. These “least” are a crowd of needy, hurt human beings. We are surrounded by people who need us. Friends, Jesus knows our names. And when we turn to him in faith and hope, he will give us the name he means to call us, as he did when He called Simon “Peter, the Rock”. He says the same to us, calling us by the name he will use for us and giving us a mission. We are salt of the earth and light of the world- the incarnate reign of Christ. on earth.
