REVELATION 6:9-10 The phrase “the day of the Lord” is an eschatological term that applies to historical judgments that came upon the people of Israel in the past but also refers to a future, terrible day when the judgments and catastrophes of planet earth will far exceed anything that preceded it. The seven seals that are opened, revealing the message and contents of the scroll, are the official proclamation by the Lord of the universe that judgment day has come!

Fifth Seal judgment: The Cry of the Martyrs (Revelation 6:9-11) One of the fascinating facts about the seven seals is that one of them speaks of those who have lost their lives because of their faith in the Word of God and their witness for the Lord. These are obviously the martyrs of history. They have a special place in the heart of God, and here they are honored uniquely.

What is the identity of these souls?

What is the injustice they express?

This does not mean that people who commit crimes are to be tolerated and that no punishment is to be given. God instituted government and the principle of law to deal with the injustices and crimes of society. The exacting of punishment does not belong to the individual but to the civil authorities (Romans 13:1-7).

The martyrs of the past simply cry, "when?" When will God do what He has promised and “avenge the blood of His servants”?

THE RED HORSE - THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE

A Rider on a Red Horse (Revelation 6:3-4) The symbolism of a “fiery red” horse was traditionally a portrait of war and bloodshed. It is possible the rider is the same as the first seal judgment. The coming world ruler will arise in an atmosphere proclaiming peace, but he will soon take it from the earth. Wars will increase before the end of human history as we now know it (Matthew 24:6-7).

It appears that just prior to the return of Jesus Christ, wars among the peoples of the world will intensify, along with the cries for peace. The horse is “fiery red,” and we cannot help relating this to the description of Satan as “an enormous red dragon” (Revelation 12:3).

THE WHITE HORSE - THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE

The opening chapters of Revelation Jesus Christ is presented as the LORD of the Churches. He appeals to the churches through letters sent to those seven churches of Asia. To those who merely profess faith but do not demonstrate that they are true overcomers, His message and challenge is to repent. To the true overcomers, He gives continual encouragement by His promises of eternal blessing and reward.

In Revelation 5, the scroll with the seven seals in the hand of the One Who sits on the throne, the Heavenly Father, is given to the only One worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals - the Lion of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb Who was slain, JESUS. All heaven breaks forth in praise, adoration and worship of Jesus because He is the Only Way, Truth, and Life that allows us to come to God in relationship.

Pronouncements of Judgment The scene now shifts in Revelation 6 from the wonderful praise of heaven to the tragic judgments on earth. Many Bible teachers believe chapters 6-19 are describing the great tribulation to which Daniel the prophet and Jesus Christ referred.
