I speak to my father about 'The Backbeach' in Teignmouth, a small fishing town on the South West coast of England. We discuss the location, the pub, the atmosphere and the future of a destination rarely seen by tourists.

Part 2 - Learn English (11:00)

In part two, we talk about the language used in the interview and learn how to apply the following words to everyday English conversation;

Well-travelled (adjective)

-  someone who has travelled widely / a lot
"He is a well-travelled man"

-  a route that is frequently used by travellers
"The coastal path is well-travelled"

To draw (verb)

to attract something/someone
"The festival draws a huge crowd every year"

Stumble across (phrasal verb)

- to find, discover or meet something unexpectedly
"We were hiking in the mountains and stumbled across a hunting cabin"

Hidden gem (idiom)

-
something extremely outstanding that not many people know about
"There is a beautiful cove behind the rocks, at the other end of the beach, it's a hidden gem"

Close to/at hand

- something that is easily accessible or within reach
"I always need a glass water close at hand when I eat spicy food"

To have your fair share of something

- to emphasise a reasonable amount of something  (usually negative)
"She has had her fair share of problems this year"

To thrive (verb)

- to grow / develop well / to flourish / to prosper
"A business cannot thrive without investment"

On the back of  (phrase)

- as a result of
"profits have increased on the back of the company's recent marketing campaign"

- soon after a earlier success
"Barcelona have lost the match on the back of three successive wins"

Quids in  (British slang)

- to be making profit (usually from a bet or a business venture)
"Bill was quids in after betting on the horses"

To dread (verb)

- to anticipate something with fear or apprehension
"I'm dreading the interview next week"

Pop to (phrasal verb)

- to go somewhere for a short amount of time
"I'm just popping to the loo"

To plonk (verb)

- to sit down or put something down carelessly/heavily
"I'm going to plonk myself in front of the TV for the rest of the day"

Tinny (noun)

- a can of beer
"let's crack open a tinny"

Jetty (noun)

- a
small pier at which boats can dock or be moored
"we dove into the sea off the jetty"
