If you work in a helping profession,
have you ever been complained about?”
When social workers try their best to help—but fail to meet a client’s subjective expectations,
we suddenly become the target.
The arrow hits us.
The mediator turns into the accused.
It’s infuriating.
So frustrating you could swear nonstop for ten seconds straight—
with a bonus eye roll that goes all the way to the sky.
But—
we are precious.
And we can’t afford to let anger ruin our own health.
That’s why we need strategies to cope with stress:
using active self-talk to shift negative emotions,
practicing positive reframing,
seeking support through internal and external supervision,
and protecting ourselves from secondary trauma.
There’s a line from an article online that says:
“Social work is a very special way of working.
You walk into people’s homes, get to know their families and neighbors,
and worry together about where the money will come from,
how to deal with family conflicts,
and which direction life should take…”
Dear you—
as we continue helping others,
please remember to take care of yourself,
and to protect yourself too.
You matter.
So… keep going.
Ganbatte.
