(English) Episode 202-Short Pec Minor Causes Shoulder Impingement Risk

Listen Later

This research study investigates how the resting length of the pectoralis minor muscle influences the movement of the shoulder blade during arm elevation.

By comparing individuals with naturally short versus long muscle measurements, researchers discovered that a tighter pectoralis minor limits the scapula's ability to tip posteriorly and increases its internal rotation.

These specific mechanical restrictions mirror the altered movement patterns often seen in patients suffering from subacromial impingement syndrome.

The findings suggest that a shortened pectoralis minor may reduce the clearance in the subacromial space, potentially predisposing healthy individuals to future shoulder injuries.

Consequently, the authors emphasize that stretching and clinical assessment of this muscle are vital strategies for preventing and managing chronic shoulder pain.
