In today's broadcast, after taking a look at the news, we go to the center of Madrid and a recent press conference at the Teatro de la Comedia, the traditional 19th-century theater run by the Spanish Culture Ministry and dedicated to classic theater productions. Spain's Siglo de Oro or Golden Age was a flourishing of the arts, literature and theater that lasted roughly a century and a half--from the end of 15th to the middle of the 17th century. One of the last playwrights of the Golden Age was Pedro Calderón de la Barca, a new co-production of whose finest play, "La vida es sueño" (Life Is A Dream), is currently running at the Teatro de la Comedia. We hear some of the interesting things that British director Declan Donnellan of the Cheek by Jowl theatre company has to say about Calderón, theatre, and life, in general.
