Among the many illustrious guests who have stayed at the hotel since it opened in 1886 are the English writer Virginia Woolf and the Argentinian singer Imperio Argentina.

After we take a look at news from Spain, Justin Coe talks to Spanish multi-disciplinary performing artist and "payasa" (clown) Idoia López Callejas, whose stage name is Idoloca. They met at the Retiro Park a few days after the two of them had attended a play from the Golden Era of Spanish theater in a new production by a troupe of clowns who go by the name Rhum & Company. The play, staged at Madrid's Teatro de la Comedia, was "El diablo cojuelo" (the limping devil), written by Luis Vélez de Guevara, who lived from 1579 to 1644.

After the newscast, Amy talks with Vichy Catalan, the company behind the bottled spring water sold worldwide. They discuss the history of the spring, the brand, and get into what 'mineral content' and 'pH' on the labels of bottled water mean.

After the newscast, Amy Egan talks to Clara Marcellán, curator of the Thyssen Museum's new exhibition "Artists’ Letters from the Anne-Marie Springer Collection," which brings together personal letters of the great painters (such as Van Gogh, Manet and Frida Khalo) and their works of art. The exhibition runs through September 25th.

American musician, composer and author Ben Sidran was back in Madrid at the beginning of June for another week-long engagement at the Café Central, the Spanish capital's premiere jazz club. In today's broadcast, after the news, we hear tunes from the new album Sidran presented to his European fans, "Swing State," his first album of strictly instrumental music: six classic jazz tunes plus one new Sidran original, the title track.

'Operation Mincemeat' is a film based on the successful British deception operation of the Second World War that was designed to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. The film stars actors Colin Firth, Jason Isaacs and Matthew MacFayden, and was released in Spain on May 20th. Our colleague at Spanish National Radio, Yolanda Flores of the program 'De Película', was able to interview director John Madden months ago at the Málaga Film Festival in Spain, and we now share this interview with listeners of the English Language Broadcast.
