Second (unreal) conditional in English - If + simple past, modal verb  Conditionals in English could be confusing at times. The second conditional, unreal conditional, or unreal conditional in the present is usually hard for some English learners. The if- clause is followed by a Simple Past or Past tense verb, and the consequence clause is followed by a modal verb, usually the modal would.
