In this episode of the Enhanced Podcast we collaborate with the South African Sports Medicine Association. Host, Nick Pereira sits down with Dr. John W. Orchard and Prof. Benita Olivier — editors and co-authors of Cricket Sports Medicine — to unpack the making of cricket’s first dedicated sports medicine textbook and what it means for the future of the game.
Bringing together contributors from across the global cricket landscape, the textbook represents a landmark step in bridging the gap between research, rehabilitation, performance, and real-world clinical practice. Across 39 chapters, it explores the unique medical and performance demands of cricket, from injury epidemiology and rehabilitation to youth athlete development and return-to-play decision making.
Drawing on his experience as Chief Medical Officer of Cricket Australia, Dr. Orchard shares insights from decades working at the highest level of the game, including the persistent challenge of lumbar stress injuries in fast bowlers, the realities of load management, and how clinicians can better use injury surveillance and classification systems in practice. Prof Olivier provides the academic lens, discussing the collaborative process behind the textbook, the importance of standardising knowledge in cricket medicine, and the ongoing challenge of translating evidence into meaningful clinical outcomes.
This conversation explores where cricket sports medicine currently stands, where it still falls short, and what clinicians, coaches, and performance staff need to better understand about keeping players healthy and performing at the highest level.

You’ve probably seen the videos—the energy, the crews, the post-run coffees (and occasional tequila stops 😅)—but behind it all is a sports scientist and biokineticist who deeply understands performance, training, and how to build sustainable runners.

We dive into:
The rise of run crews and why everyone’s running right now
How community is changing the way people train and stay consistent
The balance between performance, enjoyment, and “the vibe”
Insights into his own training, volume, and strength work
Comrades Marathon plans and what’s next
And of course… some hot takes on running culture, gear, and everything in between

In this episode, I’m joined by Tara Nicholas, a mindset and performance coach working with athletes, coaches, and teams to develop the mental side of performance.
A former elite swimmer who competed in the US collegiate system and represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games, Tara brings both lived experience and practical insight into what it really takes to perform at a high level.
We explore why mindset isn’t something you turn to when things go wrong—but something that needs to be trained with the same intent as the body.
This conversation dives into:
Why connection and clarity underpin performance
How athletes can train their mindset like a skill
What actually happens under pressure—and why some athletes thrive while others struggle
The role of identity in performance
How mindset coaching differs across school, aspiring, and elite athletes
Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or practitioner, this episode will challenge how you think about performance—and where it truly starts.
Listen now and start training the part of your performance that matters most.
