Better than the second
I gave this a four, because I reserve five for the best book I've read in a long time.
I like this book better than book one. The Earth has now expanded into the universe and is looking for the colonies derived from the mysterious Founding Colony. This book is about a man, Merritt Thackery, and his search for the colonies derived from the FC. What begins as an unsettling feeling with his job, he suddenly realizes that it is meaningless in the end, and sets out to join the "Navy". During his 400 years of space travel, Thack finds that something wicked seems to go there. He sets off on a single-minded quest to find it, and to his ultimate horror, he does. Please read the introduction, as it is part of the story.
A little sex, compared to today's standards, VERY Tasteful.

A Challenging Mystery
Overall this book is quite good. Its flavor is a tad more subtle than the previous book in the series, and marks the difficult middle ground between the dramatic Emprise and the conclusive Empery. As a yarn, I place it rather high, and Kube-McDowell manages to hold onto his audience in this one, better than say, Inherit the Stars did with its sequel. The story here is quite clever: Humans went to the stars thousands of years ago, but how did they get there, and why did the initial attempts at interstellar travel fail. Good stuff!
