A powerful story of hope, love, and imagination, set against the horrific backdrop of the Holocaust. Two Jewish girls, Julia and Suzanne, are captured in Nazi-occupied Netherlands and transported to a ghetto. Although their world views are wildly different -- Julia is jaded and bitter, Suzanne naive and optimistic -- they become each other's closest confidants as they experience the horrors of the journey to "The Paradise Ghetto." The young women use a precious smuggled notebook to write a story. As the book unfolds, it becomes the way they communicate their growing feelings for each other. But there comes a point when reality can no longer be held at bay. If the girls' names end up on the lists of deportees to Auschwitz there will be no return. Is there a chance of escaping fate?

Two stories in one!
What a fantastic book! It was actually two books in one as the main characters wrote a story as well. I found BOTH books to be excellent reads reflecting strength, determination, and hope in the face of brutal situations. I found the stories to be suspenseful; they pull you in and you can't put the book down. Written with great skill, the book moves at a perfect cadence amid well-researched times in our history. I definitely recommend this!
Palpable, frightening , exciting and enjoyable

This is an excellent read and excellent book and I am being conservative.
This book is for anyone that likes to read. I think lots of people would both enjoy and get lots form this book.
Its got everything and more. It intrigued, and scared me in equal measure.
Without wanting to be rolling out the cliches , this book for me was
Gripping and Palpable would be words I would use, as I have seen another review describing an emotional roller coaster , but this was unlike other times I have seen this phrase being used , it felt very real and frightening , and scary if I might add in an enjoyable and great way if thats possible, in terms of the human behaviour and particularly the evil end of things in that in some quarters of humanity and the world you'd have to ask have we changed much over the ages , thought provoking also,
So much going on in the book at a number of different levels
The different historical periods - great pictures painted of the life and times ,
Characters felt so real , and with behaviours that are still evident in society today
Relationships in the difficult circumstances
The battle of good over evil
Day to day living regardless of situation or challenges,
Romance of course,
Vengance
Coldness , in terms of how peolple can treat others
Down right evil in terms of how people can treat other humans
Running the Business aka writing the book under severe conditions
Peoples resilience in the face of adversity.
Life lessons,
I really enjoyed the 7 and half hours reading time is fairly accurate even though I did read it in 2 nights
I would highly recommend this for anybody that likes reading full stop. Excellent.
Genius beautiful writing
Genius beautiful writing that transports you into two worlds and takes you on a journey that we will never experience in our lifetime. You are placed in a world that became reality for millions of people.
