In this reflection for the First Sunday of Advent, 2021, Fr. Erik Arnold points us to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as an example of how to be awake to God and be ready for this season of Advent.
Jesus is telling us to avoid that sin that makes us sleepy spiritually, otherwise his coming to us in Bethlehem and now in prayer, on the sacraments and at the end of time will catch us off guard and we won’t be ready. If sin makes us sleepy, confession wakes us up with God’s mercy. It nudges our hearts, shakes us out of the sleepiness of sin, and makes us attentive to God in a new way so that we can love him and love our neighbor receiving God’s mercy in the sacrament wakes us up.
