Jolene Francis, Enloe Health Vice President and Chief Development Officer, joins Mike Wiltermood, Enloe Health President and CEO, for a discussion about Enloe Health’s major accomplishments this year, as well as those to come.

Mike talks about the recent opening of the Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center and its boost for health care in rural Northern California. He also recalls the groundbreaking of the imaging and heart and vascular center on West East Avenue, and the $9 million grant Enloe received from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

Mike also talks about how the organization may fill the spaces now vacant due to the construction of the Cancer Center.

Mike talks about his retirement early next year and about where we’ve been, along with recognizing caregivers for their hard work in boosting the Enloe culture and reputation. One of the achievements he highlights is the adoption of Planetree principles at Enloe Health.

Kevin talks about the balance sheet overview now that fiscal year 2026 has ended. He also highlights opportunities, focus areas and disciplined strategies to keep the organization’s momentum going in the next 12 months. He also discusses the situation at Oroville Hospital and offers an update on Enloe’s new Workforce Sustainability Committee and its improvements to hiring practices.

Finally, Kevin and Jolene talk about the soon-to-open Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center and the just-started imaging and heart services facility. Kevin also gives a boost to all Enloe Health departments for their continued hard work.

Mike discusses his retirement in early 2027 following 20 years at Enloe, including 16 at the helm. He goes over the transition and his confidence in the organization’s strong future. Jolene Francis, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, visits with Sandra Bernstein, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, about National Nurses Week as well as the Nurses Making a Difference Award.

National Nurses Week celebrates all nurses at Enloe Health, as well as nurses throughout the nation.

Sandra discusses the second annual Nurses Making a Difference Award and offers details on Darrell Daugherty, RN, the 2026 recipient. Darrell received his award May 6 — National Nurses Day — and enjoyed recognition for his remarkable career achievements. He started at Enloe in 1983 and has made a tremendous impact on the organization as well as in the community.

Jolene Francis, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, visits with Sean Maiorano, D.O., Chief Medical Officer, about the Family Medical Residency Program. 

Dr. Maiorano talks about the expansion of the program in just its second year of operation, as it adds six medical residents to the roster of four who joined in 2025. The program also adds four psychiatric residents as Healthy Rural California — the nonprofit organization that oversees the residency program — seeks to alleviate the critical shortage of health care providers in Northern California.

Dr. Maiorano joined other Enloe and Healthy Rural California officials in announcing the names of the new residents during Match Day, a March 20 event that was one of many similar introductions around the nation. 

The Family Medicine residents include Katherine Arnott, M.D.; Arnie Bengo, M.D.; Brock Clark, D.O.; Sadie Cochenour, D.O.; Crimsun Kessler, M.D.; and Scott Lowe, D.O. Psychiatry residents include Xiaohe “Heidi” Pei, M.D.; Jessica Nwabeke, M.D.; Aqsa Zia, M.D.; and Joele Charlene Guemkam Tueno Scott, D.O. They’ll begin clinicals at Enloe on July 1 following a two-week orientation.

Mike talks about Enloe’s need to manage the financial factors within its control, as well as potential reimbursement changes with H.R. 1, which could result in a dramatic drop in Medicare reimbursements. He also provides an update on Oroville Hospital.

Mike and Jolene share a lighter moment as they talk about Match Day, the March 20 event during which Enloe will introduce six new family medicine residents. They also share some news regarding the great work at the Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center as it approaches completion.

Mike hopes to dispel rumors about employment and operational issues that have resulted from the partnership. He also explains the related issues of admission to the rehabilitation center, billing and payment through Medicare.

December brought some expected and unexpected activity to Enloe Health. These topics take the spotlight during the January edition of Enloe’s Message.

Jolene Francis, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, speaks with Enloe Health President and CEO Mike Wiltermood about this year’s Joint Commission survey, Oroville Hospital’s bankruptcy, and the possibility of Enloe playing a part of Oroville’s reorganization. 

They also discuss the unexpected national attention Enloe received due to a widely viewed social media post.

Finally, Mike and Jolene compliment the outstanding work Enloe caregivers do during the holiday season.

Another calendar year is almost in the books, and several timely issues take the spotlight during the December edition of Enloe’s Message.

Enloe Health President and CEO Mike Wiltermood talks to Jolene Francis, Vice President and Chief Development Officer. They discuss Enloe’s strategic initiatives, the mid-year review the Enloe Health Board of Trustees will consider, the closure of Glenn Medical Center, instability at Oroville Hospital, the recent visit from the Joint Commission, and the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Enloe Health Park.
