Ennoble | A True Charity Podcast

Washington has spent roughly $50 trillion over six decades trying to build a bridge out of poverty, yet the poverty rate hasn't fallen below 10 percent since the government started measuring it in 1964. James Whitford argues that's because welfare programs are engineered to solve a math problem — a lack of cash — when poverty is actually a human problem: a lack of relationship. Only civil society, he says, can supply the materials that actually finish the bridge.

James Whitford is co-founder and executive director of Watered Gardens Ministries and True Charity, and author of The Crisis of Dependency. In this piece, he draws on the recent congressional testimony of his colleague Misty Kelso — who went from childhood trauma and homelessness to operations manager of one of Watered Gardens' residential facilities — to make the case in her own words.
