Title: Black Tudors: The Untold Story

Author: Miranda Kaufmann

Narrator: Corrie James

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10:29:07

Language: English

Release date: 11-14-17

Publisher: HighBridge Company

Genres: History, Non-Fiction, World, Social Science

Summary:

A black porter publicly whips a white English gentleman in a Gloucestershire manor house. A heavily pregnant African woman is abandoned on an Indonesian island by Sir Francis Drake. A Mauritanian diver is despatched to salvage lost treasures from the Mary Rose . . . Miranda Kaufmann reveals the absorbing stories of some of the Africans who lived free in Tudor England.

From long-forgotten records, remarkable characters emerge. They were baptised, married, and buried by the Church of England. They were paid wages like any other Tudors. Their stories, brought viscerally to life by Kaufmann, provide unprecedented insights into how Africans came to be in Tudor England, what they did there and how they were treated. A ground-breaking, seminal work, Black Tudors challenges the accepted narrative that racial slavery was all but inevitable and forces us to re-examine the seventeenth century to determine what caused perceptions to change so radically.

Title: Debriefing: Collected Stories

Author: Susan Sontag

Narrator: Coleen Marlo

Format: Unabridged

Length: 08:36:52

Language: English

Release date: 11-14-17

Publisher: HighBridge Company

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Short Stories, Literary Fiction

Summary:

Debriefing collects all of Susan Sontag's shorter fiction, a form she turned to intermittently throughout her writing life. The book ranges from allegory to parable to autobiography and shows her wrestling with problems not assimilable to the essay, her more customary mode. Here she catches fragments of life on the fly, dramatizes her private griefs and fears, lets characters take her where they will. The result is a collection of remarkable brilliance, versatility, and charm. Sontag's work has typically required time for people to catch up to it. These challenging works of literary art-made more urgent by the passage of years-await a new generation of readers. This is an invaluable record of the creative output of one of the most inquisitive and analytical thinkers of the twentieth century at the height of her power.

Title: Hero of Our Time

Author: Mikhail Lermontov

Narrator: Nicholas Boulton

Format: Unabridged

Length: 06:09:53

Language: English

Release date: 11-10-17

Publisher: Naxos Audiobooks

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Classics

Summary:

Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way. The novel has been hailed as an influence on such writers as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov, and is a striking take on Lord Byron's 'superfluous man'; it harks back to the teaching of Machiavelli, while anticipating the future work of Nietzsche.
