This episode of Enterprise Radio is in association with the Author Channel.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Dr. Dennis Jaffe discuss the following:

    * Why study long-term family businesses? What’s special and important about them?* You interviewed 100 large global family businesses that had been together for more than three generations, as a successful family and business. There are so few of them, even though they are large and important. Why study them?* You say these families are “generative” value-creating. What do you mean by that?* We hear about shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves, and about how families sell or lose their business, and other negative stories about family business. Your generative families you report, are resilient. What does that mean?* In what ways did you find that these families manage to grow and innovate over generations? How do they build innovation into their family culture, rather than just feel comfortable with their considerable wealth?* We hear all about how the young generations of family business are entitled, or not well equipped for leadership. What did the families in your study manage to develop successful leadership and commitment for several generations?

    * Let me start by asking you what inspired you to write your book “Culture Spark: 5 Steps to Ignite and Sustain Organizational Growth.” What did you set out to achieve by writing it?* In the book, you share your own take on what corporate culture is. I really like how you describe it. It makes so much sense to me. Could you read that definition?* Early in the book you write: “These five issues – complacency, disconnection to values and disconnected values, ego, misaligned processes, and micromanagement – lead to the big one: a company culture teeming with disengaged employees. And this is an international predicament that needs to be resolved.” How pervasive is employee disengagement today? What can an organization do to avoid becoming a victim of these five issues and prevent creating a culture of disengaged employees?* Leaders play a vital role in the creation of an organization’s culture. How they model the desired behaviors and demonstrate their values is key to shaping the culture and sustaining it. How do you think about the role that leaders play in creating a culture?
