The ability to make the best of undesireable circumstances and setbacks – and find creative solutions - is an important skill to develop as an entrepreneur. The truth is, life, will occasionally knock you down. And when that happens, negative emotions, stewing over circumstances you cannot control, or getting angry at yourself, is simply a waste of your precious energy. I know this is easier said than done, because we have our habitual reactions and emotional triggers, and it’s hard to stop the crappy feelings from flaring up.

I made an epic blunder by allowing my visa to run out AND missing my flight to the Maldives by 5 minutes. I didn’t give myself enough time to clear customs, which was slow, plus I was even more slowed down by my having to pay the overstay fine. And then, I just had to get a cappuccino before getting on the plane. I’m so used to pushing the envelope with time, and getting through by the skin of my teeth.

Well, when I got to my gate, the agent said to me,

“You missed your flight.”

I stared at her dumbly.

“You missed your flight. It left 5 minutes ago.”

It started to sink in. The Aggressor Fleet live-aboard dive boat would leave Malé at 4pm that day without me, and since the boat was already provisioned, it was doubtful that at the 11th hour, they’d refund my $2,000 payment; I'd lost this round-trip flight ticket, which cost about $600; and my visa, including my extension, had expired, so I had to leave the country. I had been working a lot and was really looking forward to 1 week of unplugging completely, so the thought of flying back to Chiang Mai to continue working away, while completely wasting all that money, and time, made me feel like an epic fail.

However, being angry at oneself is completely unproductive. I allowed myself a couple of minutes of feeling crappy & stupid, and then let it go. I started to inquire about options, and expressed gratitude to the agent helping me. Thankfully, Aggressor Fleet has a 24 hour on-call agent to help with snafus like this. Fortunately, while I wasn’t allowed to legally leave the transit area, I could get on the same flight the next day for a $30 change ticket fee. And the dive boat was going to be diving the local area, so they could actually pick me up at the airport the same time the next day, for free.

I also had access to the airline wifi lounge, restaurants, a smoothie / juice bar, a spa, showers and, if I wanted to pay, a bed I could rent for 8 hours for $156 USD if I didn’t want to stretch out on 3 airport lounge seats, which, hooray, didn’t have arm rests! I could just deal with it rather comfortably, at airport prices, and crank out some work. So apart from the missed dives, my situation really wasn’t that bad.

Now when I look at this whole situation I created for myself, it’s small stuff not worth sweating about. But how do you become a master at not letting the big, complicated obstacles of life derail you?

Have you ever had an experience of seeing a total stranger, and feeling a sense of recognition that compels you to want to talk to them? While I was celebrating the end of the Mayan Calendar - December 2012 - in Mexico, I had the privilege of meeting a digital nomad kindred spirit while I was on my way to Cozumel for a scuba diving holiday.

We actually crossed paths weeks before at El Castillo, an ancient Mayan archaeological site in Tulum. Somehow, something clicked between us in passing – he laughed at a joke I made to my friends, but we didn't talk, so when I ran into him again, randomly, I figured the synchronicity was worth approaching him. Ever wish business was easy? Every entrepreneur I’ve spoken to has told me that starting a business and growing it, was a lot of hard work, that really involves busting through your fears, and persevering beyond the point where most people give up.

Typically, along this entrepreneurial journey, you might stumble upon this concept, which has become a bit of a “holy grail” in the online world. That’s the idea of “passive income.”

However, passive income, is rarely ever “passive”. It may be residual, recurring income, that is to say that revenues come in 24/7, even if you are offline and on vacation for a week or more. But passive income usually involves quite a bit of active work.

Driving traffic, testing offers, optimizing conversions, getting your product pages ranked on the 1st page of Google. That’s work, folks.

So today I’m going to talk to Justin Cooke, a lifestyle entrepreneur who is based in Davao City, which is located on a beautiful tropical island in the Philippines. He runs a site called Empire Flippers, with his partner Joe Magnotti.

They teach people how to build websites that generate Adsense income. All the work you need to do is up front – keyword research and SEO copywriting. These sites rank in Google entirely based on keyword optimization – no need to go through the onerous task of building up backlinks.

A “successful” site brings in approximately $50/ month in Adsense revenue. If you built up a portfolio of these websites, you could easily make several thousand a month in truly passive income.

I’ve interviewed nearly 50 entrepreneurs to date, and most of them had at least 1, if not many, business failures in their lives. Some were low-key failures that just ended up eating up a lot of time, but fortunately, did not result in financial ruin. Others were massive, crash and burn failures that cost a buttload of money, theirs as well as their investors’, while sending the founder into credit card debt.

One of the key challenges for entrepreneurs is learning how to fail quickly, to ensure that your precious time, energy, and resources aren’t being wasted on a business idea that’s going no where. But it’s so hard to know if your endeavor is a tire-kicker, or if you are just on the threshold of success. So how do you determine whether or not you should move on, or keep powering through?

Enter the art of startup validation – strategies and tactics to test whether or not your market wants the products or services you offer, before you go out build it.  But how well do these strategies actually work?

Dan Norris, co-founder of WP Curve, is a serial entrepreneur who has launched several businesses, including software products and a private community.  He talks about 4 common startup validation strategies:
