So this episode wasn’t planned. But I had to hit record and talk about what just happened with my 10-year-old.
He got in trouble at school… for doing something I literally get paid to do. The kid launched his first little business. Saw a gap in the market — the school store didn’t have stickers — so he convinced my wife to buy a bunch on Amazon, then turned around and started selling them to the third and fourth graders for bluff bucks. He even brought in a couple friends, gave them a handful of stickers, told them they could keep part of what they made, and boom — he built a sales team. That’s what I do for a living. That’s entrepreneurship 101.
But apparently… that’s not allowed. He got told it was “taking advantage” of other kids. And look, I’m trying to be respectful here, but that’s wild to me. The school itself gives out bluff bucks to reward kids for good behavior — and lets them exchange them for prizes. So my son did exactly that. Just… better. And because he was better at it, they shut it down. Not only that, they gave him a mark in his folder. And you know what I did? I gave him five bucks. Told him I was proud of him. Because I am.
Look — I’m not bashing teachers. I couldn’t do what they do. But man, we’ve got to stop punishing kids for being creative. He found a solution. He was respectful. He didn’t hurt anyone. And instead of being encouraged, he got in trouble. That’s a problem. Because this was a chance to teach real-world thinking, and we missed it. Big time.
Anyway… just felt like this one needed to be shared.

Starting a business is never easy—and if we’re being honest, most of us just figure it out as we go. In this episode, I sat down with Joel and Dexter from Hemispheres Cafe, and man, this conversation hit home. These guys opened up about what it’s really like to start something from scratch—not just the Instagram version of entrepreneurship, but the real stuff. Like sitting in a backyard wondering if coffee could be more than just something you drink, and then making a decision that changes everything.
We got into the messy parts—trying to launch in the middle of COVID, pivoting into smoothies and food, chasing growth that ended up costing more than they expected, and realizing that sometimes you’ve gotta cut your losses and protect what really matters—your family, your health, and your peace. They shared how hard it was to let go of their flagship location after pouring everything into it, and how they processed the grief that came with that failure. But what stuck with me most was how they stayed grounded in their friendship through all of it. That right there is rare.
I shared some of my own lessons too—like how failure doesn’t define you, and the freedom to coach your kid’s baseball game means more than chasing another dollar. We talked about numbers, burnout, and what it means to build something that doesn’t just make money, but makes sense for your life.
So if you’re someone who’s thinking about starting a business—or maybe you’re in the thick of it and wondering if it’s supposed to be this hard—this one’s for you. We’ve been there. We’ve had wins, taken losses, and learned to ask for help when we needed it. And if there’s one thing we want you to take from this episode, it’s this: you’re not in it alone.

Starting a business without a lot of money sounds impossible, right? You hear people talk about getting loans, finding investors, and having to drop serious cash on inventory. It can feel like you need a mountain of money just to get started. But what if you could launch a business with less than $1,000? Is that really possible, or just a pipe dream?
In this episode, I share what it’s really like to bootstrap a business — to make it work with what you have. I talk about my own experience of trying to start a business from scratch and the struggles of getting traditional funding. Let me tell you, banks don’t just hand out money to brand-new entrepreneurs, no matter what you might hear. So instead of going for high-cost, high-risk ventures, I’ve always leaned toward service-based businesses. If you can offer a skill — whether it’s cleaning pools, fixing things around the house, or some other hands-on service — you can start small, scale slowly, and build from there.
I also get into the practical steps you can take if you’re looking to start a business with limited funds. I talk about setting up an LLC to protect yourself, using free or low-cost advertising through social media and Google Business Profile, and keeping expenses as low as possible until your business starts bringing in cash. If you’re wondering if you can make a business work without a big budget, this episode is for you.
If you’ve got questions or you’re just curious to hear more, reach out! I’d love to help you figure out how to make your idea work without breaking the bank.
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:
00:00 - Introduction
00:31 - What is bootstrapping?
01:09 - Why high-cost startup ideas are difficult for beginners
01:47 - The reality of SBA loans for new entrepreneurs
03:00 - Starting a side hustle and setting it up for success

A lot of new businesses don’t fail because the idea is bad—it’s because of a few key mistakes that could’ve been avoided. In this episode, I’m breaking down the three biggest ones I see all the time so you don’t have to learn the hard way.
First, just having a great skill or product isn’t enough. If you don’t have a plan to actually get customers, your business won’t last. Then there’s the issue of money—too many people jump in without enough cash to keep things going long enough to get off the ground. And finally, trying to do everything yourself? That’s a fast track to burnout and dropping the ball on things that actually keep your business running.
I’ve made these mistakes myself, and I’ve watched plenty of others do the same. So let’s talk about how to avoid them. Tune in, take notes, and if you’ve got questions, reach out—I’m always happy to chat about this stuff!
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:
00:00 - Introduction
00:54 - Mistake #1: Thinking a great skill or product is enough without a plan to get customers
03:57 - How to avoid the ‘great idea, no customers’ trap
04:38 - Mistake #2: Not having enough financial runway to keep the business afloat
07:49 - How to avoid the cash flow crunch that kills new businesses
09:22 - Mistake #3: Trying to do everything yourself for too long
11:00 - How to avoid running yourself into the ground as a business owner

Is your business feeling stuck, like no matter what you do, growth just seems out of reach?
Many entrepreneurs struggle to take their business to the next level, often falling into common pitfalls without even realizing it.
So today, I’ve invited my good friend Neal Maier from Tread Partners to talk about why. Neal has seen firsthand where business owners can go wrong—especially when it comes to digital marketing—and he shares the biggest mistakes he has seen and what you can do differently.
We talk about everything from go-to-market strategies to budgeting mistakes and why so many new business owners think marketing is some magic fix. Neal is on both sides of the table—he builds businesses, runs a marketing agency, and now specializes in helping multi-location tire dealers and auto repair shops grow. He has a ton of insight into what actually works.
We also get into some misconceptions about digital marketing, red flags to watch for when hiring a marketing partner, and why good visuals—like actual photos of your business—matter way more than people think. If you’re looking for real, honest talk about what’s holding your business back (and what to do about it), you’re in the right place. Let's jump into it!
