In 1981, not long before he died, writer William Saroyan was quoted by the Associated Press as having said, “Everybody has got to die, but I have always believed an exception would be made in my case. Now what?” That’s a question every person alive must eventually face. What happens when a person dies? Does the Bible tell us? And how is the subject important in the overall picture of Bible truth? In order to understand how human beings end, we must first examine how human beings were originally made.

In 2012, a remarkable discovery was made. For many years, Sandy Island was shown on maps of the South Pacific. It was a small island located west of New Caledonia, a little over midway between New Zealand and Australia. But cartographers received a surprise when they looked at satellite images of the area and discovered Sandy Island wasn’t there! Bewildered scientists sailed to the area, and instead of Sandy Island, they found only water. The truth was that in spite of maps saying otherwise for decades, Sandy Island didn’t exist—and never had! Even though it appeared on maps—even though it was believed to be there—Sandy Island wasn’t real. How many other things are like that? Most “old wives’ tales” are harmless, but could it be possible that a commonly held belief within the Christian church simply isn’t true? Could Christians believe in something that simply doesn’t exist?

Some years ago, it became popular for married couples to schedule a regular “date night.” Faced with the demands of modern life, many husbands and wives figured the only way they could get “quality time” was to reserve one night a week during which they could spend meaningful time together. But what if your life is so busy that you find it hard to make time for God? When He created the world, God did something special to make sure His children could always have time for Him!

Stress, depression, addiction, illness and much more conspire to rob people of peace. The Bible refers to Jesus as the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Yet there seems to be a remarkable lack of peace in the world today. Does God have a way of restoring real peace into the lives of His people?

For thousands of years, there have been claims made about the existence of a place that very few people can claim to have seen. The first book of the Bible refers to heaven, as does the last book of the Bible, Revelation. In fact, heaven is mentioned in the Bible hundreds of times.

Does heaven really exist? And if it does, what is it like? As we consult the Bible, we'll find that what God has planned for us is as good as it gets!
