In response to a request to develop a national strategy for science communication, Questacon launched the Inspiring Australia initiative, now in its second year of implementation. Aligning a myriad of science communication activities is quite a challenge alongside running an award-winning science centre.

Victoria's Alpine National Park is a unique ecological environment. Second and third year students studying in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering at La Trobe University's Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne campuses have the option to study an elective unit in Alpine Ecology. The subject involves a weeklong field trip to Falls Creek. For the 30 students on the camp its an opportunity to experience first-hand the work of an Ecologist in the field.

Geo-engineering is the deliberate and engineered manipulation of the earth’s systems to counterbalance the warming effect of rising greenhouse gas concentrations. It is emerging as a third leg of climate change policy, or even as an alternative to mitigation and adaptation, despite substantial ethical and other concerns.

Arid zone ecology is one of two new field trip based subjects offered by the Department of Environmental Management and Ecology at the La Trobe Albury-Wodonga campus. Recently students undertook ecological research in the field at Calperum Station in eastern South Australia.
