Ep 1: When the rubber hits the road: Employment and Disability in Australia - Part One

Listen Later

Landing an interesting and meaningful job can really improve the quality of our lives. So why are employment rates so dire for people with disability in Australia?
In this episode we interview people with disability who are looking for work and those who have found work and what their experiences have been like along the way. We speak with researchers about the health and socio-economic benefits of work. We talk to Natalie and Alex who discuss what it's like looking for jobs and sustaining work with a mental health condition. We hear about the challenges for young people with disability transitioning from school into paid work, and how the Disability Employment Service providers assist people with psychosocial disability getting into the labour market.
Note this episode features Allison Milner, who died in a tragic accident shortly after her interview was recorded. We are continuing her legacy with the permission of her family by including her in this episode, talking about her employment research and it's significance for the lives of people with disability.
