Hermione gets petrified, conveniently just after she figures everything out, now Harry and Ron are on their own. Dumbledore and Hagrid get taken away, with a passing super subtle hint from Hagrid to "follow the spiders" to meet the monstrocity that was Hagrid's pet, and Ron and Harry figure out what is going on and enter the Chamber...
