During an episode of “Finding Your Roots” on PBS with Henry Louis Gates Jr., a search through Michael’s family history unearthed a shocking revelation: Michael Moore is related to America’s 31st President, 1929-1933, Republican Herbert Hoover.
After grappling with the fact (and the irony) that the Franklin Delano Roosevelt-loving, Democratic party-supporting Moore family was actually related to FDR’s Republican predecessor, Michael decided to search deeper into his roots during a trip earlier this year to Hoover’s home state of Iowa.
This episode was recorded at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, Museum and birthplace in West Branch, Iowa. After touring the museum, Michael sat down with three archivists, Craig Wright, Elizabeth Dinschel and Lynn Smith, to learn more about Hoover and the Great Depression, Hoover’s ill-fated presidency, and his Quaker roots. Michael struggles over whether he wants to go public about his connection with Hoover, but then realizes there may be some perks if a President was your cousin. Michael asks if he can crash on the Hoover couch for the night, seeing how, you know, he’s family.
