EP 108: John S. Couch - Leading Your Own Creative Rebellion

Listen Later

Widely recognised as one of todays great creative minds, John S. Couch is a prolific artist, designer and VP Product Design at streaming service Hulu. John started at Wired Magazine where he developed his love for technology and design before taking on leadership roles at The Museum of Contemporary Art, CBS, eBay and now Hulu. With a Japanese mum and a dad from Texas he's described as part Sumurai, part Cowboy. John has a unique view on living a rebellious life to express our true creative soul.
  • Early in his career John said he lacked confidence around his creativity. When did he believe he could do it?
  • How does John use his creative focus in the face of his creative fear?
  • A big part of who you are as a designer is to look at things and say, why is it like that, and not like this?
  • Has John ever seen himself as a character or an alter ego to step past his own perceived barriers?
  • John shares his important ceremonies or rituals to move from the state of doing to the state of being?
  • How important is the "where" in creativity?
  • How does John embrace Wabi Sabi in his life?
  • What influence has his mum and his Japanese heritage had on him as a man?
  • Does a creative leader today actually need Two Mind… now and then, what is and what could be?
  • John refers to his wife JC as his creative collaborator. Is it intentional? What's behind it?
  • How does the content of the book Extreme Ownership resonate with John for leading creativity?
  • John's view on the Japanese samurai warrior practice called "dying before going into battle."
  • What does it mean to be rebellious? How would I know I was creatively rebellious?
