The Survivor’s Guide To Thriving

Ep. 116: What Fitness Can Tell Us About Ourselves with Missy Henry & Christina Schroeder

Listen Later

It's time for the final episode of our three-part series on health, fitness and nutrition! This week, MJST coach Christina Schroeder is talking with coach and athlete Missy Henry about what fitness can teach us about ourselves – and it has nothing to do with how much weight we can lift.

Missy was born and raised in Omaha. Her passion for health and exercise was cultivated through her years as an athlete and watching her family battle severe health issues due to an unhealthy lifestyle. As a long-time personal trainer and strength coach, Missy opened Edge Body in December 2014. She was also a full-time faculty member in the department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation (HPER) at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), teaching undergraduate Exercise Science courses from the Fall of 2011 to the Spring of 2016. Missy and her husband Rob, welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Sawyer, in May 2016.

In this conversation, Christina and Missy talk about:

  • What Missy learns from listening to new clients talk about themselves and their goals
  • Why paying attention to body language and triggers is critical when assigning meaning to an experience like exercise
  • How we "cushion the blow" for self-sabotaging behaviors
  • Why "this is just who I am" can actually be really disempowering, and
  • The top 3 differences Missy sees between people who are really ready to change their lives – and those who aren't

In a lot of ways, exercise and what happens in the gym is simply a metaphor for how we treat ourselves in many areas of life. This discussion uncovers some of those parallels. Enjoy!
