Ep 121: Seeking Truth Through Fiction

Listen Later

Harry and Rafe explore two pieces of literature, The Storm (1898) by Kate Chopin and Lyin' Eyes (1975) by Glenn Frey and Don Henley and recorded by the Eagles.  Both short stories are tales of marital infidelity — certainly not a topic associated with virtue! — but one story gets it wrong (by pretending there are no repercussions) and one story gets it right (by showing the way that self-centeredness and deceit weave an oppressive wet blanket of remorse and despair).

Good fiction reveals truths about the world, a world based in reality.  A good story does not have to be technically true, or even have characters doing good things, but it needs to be consistent and true to the Nature of the Human Condition so as to teach us how to live with virtue, to live excellently.
