Paul discusses the importance of accumulated acceleration load, a comprehensive metric that provides an overview of the stress being put on the women athletes' bodies. Paul also talks about the importance of managing mileage, especially the day before a game, to ensure the athletes are not overworked and are ready to compete. He factors in cycle monitoring, and how this plays a part in maintaining a high level of preparation for his athletes, as well as how it factors into the intensity of game prep and workouts. This is applied and evaluated on an individual basis, as different members of the team have different cycles, resulting in more moving parts from a performance planning perspective. Thus, Paul has to be very strategic and fluid in his scheduling for each athlete in order to ensure success as a whole.
He shares how he uses an Excel spreadsheet to create a "drill library", which helps the coaches understand what drills accumulate the most mileage, as well as plan practices efficiently.
One of the key insights in this episode is the concept of optimal practice time. Based on an article given to him by Pat Lewis (Charlotte's men's basketball strength coach), Paul found the optimal practice time, the day before a game, that gives his team the best odds to cover the spread. This doesn't guarantee a win, but it does give the team the best possible chance to compete effectively.
Paul's approach is data-driven, and he emphasizes the importance of using data to make informed decisions about practice intensity and duration. He shares his experiences and the successes and failures they've had with this approach.
