00:00 Welcome to The Xtra Edge: A KINEXON Sports Analytics Podcast
On this episode of The Xtra Edge Podcast we sit down with Dr. Simon Overkamp, the Head of Strength & Conditioning for the German Handball Federation. Dr. Overkamp shares his innovative, data-driven approach to player management that not only keeps athletes better rested but also significantly reduces knee injuries.
Dr. Overkamp oversees the strength and conditioning programs for all the Federation men’s and women’s teams. He discusses the challenges coaches face in resting players during the grueling handball season, where athletes often play for multiple teams simultaneously. Coaches naturally want to use their best players in crucial moments, but this can lead to increased injury risks.
He reveals how his analysis of injury statistics showed a spike in joint-related injuries in February, following the International Tournament and the European or World Championships in January. In Olympic years, a similar spike occurs in September. To combat this, he developed a load management plan using data from an IMU player tracking system, which has already led to a nearly 20% reduction in knee injuries among his European Championship Team.
Tune in to learn more about how Dr. Overkamp's strategies are making a difference in the world of team handball, especially with the Olympic Games as a key factor in his equation.

Lessons from the Court Phillip Tandrup Holm's journey is one of passion and precision. From collecting data for KIF Kolding and through his new role as Strength and Conditioning Coach for Skjern Håndbold, he's hoping to master the art of load management, and how specific metrics like accumulated acceleration and exertion can predict match intensities and prevent injuries.
When imbalance struck the team, Coach Holm faced a unique situation. Learn how strategic decisions and data insights helped address the disproportionate workload of a lone right back, preventing overuse injuries and preparing the team for unforeseen circumstances.
Structuring training weeks for optimal match play is pivotal. Coach Holm's approach ensures players maintain performance levels, whether it's preseason or the heat of the regular season.
At the heart of it all lies communication. The synergy between coaches, data scientists, and conditioning staff is what turns numbers into actionable strategies. Join us as Coach Holm emphasizes the magic that happens when data informs decisions.

Athletic Performance: Insights from Jim Krumpos and Dayannara Muñoz
In this episode of The Xtra Edge podcast, join host Dave Grendzynski as he talks athletic performance enhancement with two more outstanding coaches. Our special guests are Jim Krumpos the Associate Athletics Director, Sports Performance and Director of Olympic Sports at the University of Arizona and Dayannara Munoz an Assistant Coach specializing in Performance Enhancement at the University of Arizona.
Unique Roles and Responsibilities
Jim Krumpos sheds light on his multifaceted role overseeing the entire Performance department. From strength and conditioning coaches to nutrition staff, Krumpos ensures athletes receive top-notch training and support. He also shares his passion for hands-on coaching, bridging theory with practice.
Coach Krumpos emphasizes the power of data. Gone are the days of relying solely on intuition. With metrics like heart rate variability (HRV), coaches can pinpoint deficiencies, optimize load management, and enhance player readiness. Dayannara Muñoz also chimes in, revealing how data transformed her coaching approach.
The duo discusses using data to identify outliers—those players who appear fatigued or lack effort. Krumpos recounts a case where elevated heart rate led to a breakthrough: addressing mineral deficiencies and sleep patterns. The result? Improved performance and debunked conditioning myths.
Muñoz is pursuing a second graduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Arizona while serving as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer with the United States Air Force. An MIT and Columbia University graduate with a passion for numbers, she is described by Krumpos as "the brains behind the operation." He emphasized the importance of having someone on the team who can interpret and explain data effectively, even if it means recruiting from the math department.
Both guests stress the importance of comprehensive sports performance programs. Beyond reps and sets, they track bar speed, jump metrics, and more. It's about precision, science, and maximizing athletic potential.

Paul discusses the importance of accumulated acceleration load, a comprehensive metric that provides an overview of the stress being put on the women athletes' bodies. Paul also talks about the importance of managing mileage, especially the day before a game, to ensure the athletes are not overworked and are ready to compete. He factors in cycle monitoring, and how this plays a part in maintaining a high level of preparation for his athletes, as well as how it factors into the intensity of game prep and workouts. This is applied and evaluated on an individual basis, as different members of the team have different cycles, resulting in more moving parts from a performance planning perspective. Thus, Paul has to be very strategic and fluid in his scheduling for each athlete in order to ensure success as a whole.
He shares how he uses an Excel spreadsheet to create a "drill library", which helps the coaches understand what drills accumulate the most mileage, as well as plan practices efficiently.
One of the key insights in this episode is the concept of optimal practice time. Based on an article given to him by Pat Lewis (Charlotte's men's basketball strength coach), Paul found the optimal practice time, the day before a game, that gives his team the best odds to cover the spread. This doesn't guarantee a win, but it does give the team the best possible chance to compete effectively.
Paul's approach is data-driven, and he emphasizes the importance of using data to make informed decisions about practice intensity and duration. He shares his experiences and the successes and failures they've had with this approach.
