Much of Evangelion 3.0 was made the way it was due to the intent of it being part one of a two-part final chapter, with part two initially set to release just one year later in 2013. However, due to Anno's declining mental health, the movie was put on indefinite hold, with no clear release for years. Fortunately, once he felt healthy enough after directing Shin Godzilla with Shinji Higuchi, he quickly got back to work, and despite COVID delays, the long-awaited final ending to Evangelion released worldwide in 2021.
