Temple of Doom is the black sheep of the Indiana Jones franchise. It's dark, terrifying and actually kind of gross at points. 

But is Temple of Doom the worst in the original trilogy or is it just misunderstood?

It also doesn't help that Spielberg himself thinks that Temple of Doom is the worst in the franchise. Yes, even including Crystal Skull.
