Two thousand dollars.

That's all the money Melissa Mayo had when she first arrived in Los Angeles from South Africa to see if she could make her Hollywood dreams a reality.

Back then she was in her 20s, knew nobody and her parents were afraid she'd starve to death.

It was an uphill battle, but along the way, her passion for food would eventually lead to great opportunities including cooking for Academy Award-winning composer, Hans Zimmer and high-powered movie executive, Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Despite never going to culinary school, Melissa would go on to appear on The Food Network and later develop a passionate community of followers (over 200,000 people on her email list) who love her recipes and outgoing personality.
